Running Over Auburn
Matt Maiocco has a recap of a conference call with Coffee:
Coffee said he is excited about becoming a teammate of Frank Gore, whose style he admires. Coffee describes himself as a pounder - a player who would rather "run over you" than try to run away from defenders. "I'm passionate and I love contact," he said.
Coffee said he believes playing for Nick Saban at Alabama will help him in his transition to the NFL. "He's the best coach to play under," Coffee said. "I feel prepared very well for the NFL."
EDIT 8:11AM
I'll move the draft day discussion post back up to the top of the page in the fourth round.

The 49ers have selected RB Glen Coffee from Alabama with their third round pick. This pick is something that we expected the 49ers to make since they were looking for Frank Gore's backup. But with Coffee, I have to wonder if he was the best running back available.

I had hoped the team would have gotten North Carolina State's Andre Brown, but let's look at what Coffee brings to the table.

He has a strong body that can be used to push forwarrd. But his leg strength isn't the most ideal since he has a tendency to not be able to get much when being tackled. He did however benefit a lot from a strong blocking from Andre Smith. With that said, we can only assume that the 49ers can block somewhat enough for him to make an impact.
These are his stats from last year: He had 14 starts with 1,383 yards (5.9-yard average). He also caught 16 passes. Gore is the main pass-catching back for the team so we might just see Coffee as a straight up runner for the team.

Coffee is a 49er and looks to become Gore's back up. Let's hope that there are more positives on the field for him than all the negatives that we've read on paper about him.

Po'chop,

After reviewing that vid clip, I've come to the conclusion that there are probably a few members on this site who could've rushed for 100 yards the way our OL dominated the LoS. :elephant:

I think the highlight of the video was the law he was laying down on their secondary. In a league where it isnt strange to see a safety tackle a runningback behind the los, it certainly is nice.

The best part of the vid IMO is the part close to the beginning where he runs at the auburn safety and snaps his head back.

Inanycase, the writers in SF seem to concerned with flash. Power is consisten though. He will get the job done, but it wont be a piece of art.

I watched a replay the other day and was thinking along those lines. Domination of the LoS might be an understatement ;)
