"California has expanded the scope of a travel ban that took effect in January to include states that have laws discriminating against LGBTQ people.

The ban forbids state-funded travel to states that, since June 26, 2015, have enacted laws discriminating against people on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra added four more states to the travel ban on Thursdayā€”Alabama, Kentucky, South Dakota and Texasā€”doubling the number of the blacklisted states initially included in the legislation."

Not sure what laws are on the books in the state of Alabama, but even if push comes to shove with Fresno State and they have to cancel the game, we will be fine. LSU has had to cancel 2 nonpower 5 schools the last 2 seasons and it didn't seem to have any effect on their position in the polls. If they decide to play football with the Tide, the good folks of California will at least have a legitimate reason for feeling offended and personally assaulted when they leave on the short end of this one.

That's what I'm waiting to see.

Even more specifically, how the "law(s)" are written. What we may read as one thing, the Attorney General of the state of California may read differently.

My gut instinct says there aren't LGBT laws. I have doubts there are any written that demonstrate a discriminatory practice or an "anti LGBT" stance. But how do they read what's on the books...

Apparently a lot like this:


California's law, AB 1887, went into effect Jan. 1, 2017. It prohibits state-funded and state-sponsored travel to states with laws that authorize or require discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or same-sex couples.


Why was travel to Alabama banned?
Each of the states included in the travel ban has recently passed laws involving LGBT rights. In Alabama's case, it was the passage of a law allowing adoption agencies in the state to follow faith-based policies, including the option to not place children with gay couples.


Doesn't sound like a USC/Bama home and home series anytime soon.

But is the travel state funded or sponsored then? I would think it comes from an athletic revenue standpoint which is based off of donations, tickets sales yadda yadda, not state grants. Hell the $1.4M they are making from the trip could be counted as Alabama funded and not even matter what the state of California says.

USC is private, so my guess is they're not getting state funding in their athletic departments.

The Alabama Child Placing Agency Inclusion Act says that the state could not refuse to license or re-license agencies because of policies based on religious beliefs.

Article even goes to mention these groups don't receive any state funding from Alabama.

I suppose, but it's not likely that the state of California is waiting for any interpretation or legal explanation from Alabama. Nor does the cultural revolution we seem to be in the middle of today seem to be overly concerned about the conscience that sets itself against the political policy.

There has alway been plenty of pushback from the south on cultural issues, it's just interesting how sports these days is being flaunted to make inroads in that struggle.
 
Well...if they really are committed to LBGTQ....what ever the hell all that means....
Then they should stay firm on their commitment to that community...and forfeit and stay home...show the world...firm stand....we are LBGTQ oriented...we love you...we will stand with you....forever...save me a few hndred $$$$...we could do another ADay....and it be more competitive ...California..land of fruits and nuts
 
Since I'm not allowed to give my personal political/social opinion online or social media anymore... I will just comment on the game itself... could they not fly to another state closer to Bama, and then drive the rest of the way?
