🏈 Former No. 1 overall prospect, defensive tackle Byron Cowart, is leaving the Auburn program.

Yes, I realize who I'm linking here.

Hour two, Finebaum interviewing Brandon Marcello from Auburn Undercover ...

It's worth the listen because it's a good interview. Paul pegs Brandon a few times with the right questions like why did Byron leave. What's good about that question is it following Brandon bragging about Auburn signing the best player in the history of the program based on him being ranked as the top player in the class.

"So, why did he leave?"
"Perhaps, it's arguable, he was over-rated by the services."

See, that does make sense ... sort of ... but then you're also throwing the coaching staff under the bus for evals.

He touches on the hires of Jacobs (Galloway, Meyers) and the fans upset with Gus going as far as comparing it to 2012.

It's about 30 minutes .... FW to the 10 min mark the the start of the piece ... it'll give you a good insight on how these stories are being framed by the Auburn beat writers.

Sounds like coaching evaluations got thrown under the bus REALLY quick there!!!

That was my thought as well.

Another comment that caught my attention has some truth in it as well. Brandon mentions how Cowart was recruited by Boom and their long standing relationship. He went on to mention over the past two years Garner hasn't been able to "related" to Cowart--no relationship there is what he was driving towards.

Now, I realize I'm comparing apples to oranges but I couldn't help but about Bo, the relationships he developed with the defensive linemen, and his "departure" from Tuscaloosa....and then take into account what has happened with those players Bo recruited under Karl Dunbar.

Where is the difference found? The coaches? Or, perhaps the character of the kids being recruited and how they've been recruited?

I mean... We could say every time someone leaves Bama it was because the kid was overrated or poor evaluation.

But IMO most of the time the player hasn't done his job... Because what coach doesn't want to win? These contracts make it pretty simple. Winning = getting paid.

A kid who's doing everything right in practice and on the field is going to play. Obviously there are a few things in terms of chemistry, fit, coaching changes, exceptional talent @ position, etc that come up... But usually it's on the kid IMO.

A little hyperbole there ... but, as soon as I read this Kamara comes to mind. He wasn't overrated. It wasn't a poor evaluation.

But IMO most of the time the player hasn't done his job

...and sticking with the same team, Sentimore.

But usually it's on the kid IMO.

Usually on the kid? Sheffield was getting beat time and time again in practice. He could have stuck it out and continued to improve. Is that on him, or the people around him? Likely, and equally, both.

However, with what's going on down on the Plains? I've been pointing to character issues and the repercussions of coaching hires down there since Chiz and Malzahn got together. Are the problems down there a cultural problem or are we putting that on the kids? In my opinion, both...and not equally in this case.

Somewhere in this soap opera is the term "entitlement." I'm sure he came in and expected everything to be handed to him. He was a big stud coming out of high school but now he's playing against men who have just as much, if not more, athletic ability as he does. He dominated in high school and thought it would be the same in college. Well, you have to work to improve. You have to run the defensive plays as written.
