I'll never forget his tackle on 3rd down in the 1979 Sugar Bowl. IMO, just as great a play as the next down (Goal Line Stand), but not as recognized. If he doesn't keep Fitzke from stepping about 1 yard into the end zone, there is no Goal Line Stand. Thoughts and prayers for him.

Atmore joins McNeal to fight MS

Published 10:49am Saturday, July 25, 2015

The city of Atmore came together Saturday to fight for one of their own, and also help raise money to battle a horrific disease.

Saturday morning was the Don McNeal 5K Community Walk for Multiple Sclerosis (MS), which started and ended at the Atmore Area YMCA. The event is named for McNeal, a star football player at Escambia County High School who went on to play for The University of Alabama and in the NFL.

Don McNeal was in attendance Saturday, and thanked the community for its support.
McNeal, a 1976 graduate of ECHS, has MS. It is a disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body.

McNeal was not only in attendance Saturday, but his spirits were high as he thanked the crowd for coming out to support both him and the National MS Society.

“They told me that I have MS,” McNeal said. “But as you see on my T-shirt, I may have MS but MS doesn’t have me.

“I really appreciate everyone who came out and participated today.”

Katelyn Harrison was the first female finisher, and District Judge Jeff White was the first male finisher.

For more on this story, see the Wednesday, July 29, edition of The Atmore Advance.

Don was diagnosed with MS several years ago. It's now to the point where it really impacts how he gets around. When the 1979 team had a reunion during a football game back in 2009, Don had a cane to give himself some stability.

What a man and player.
Fight it Don, give it all again.
You' re pretty good at that.
We could use more of the toughness you possess.
Seriously your picture on my wall was an inspiration to me.
Roll Tide and God bless buddy!
