He's on the field here for ABC. Just putting that in perspective, one can't get much higher a position in sports broadcasting than being where Verne was in 1981.

Imagine what's he'd seen, over his career, back then?

Verne Lundquist (then of ABC) interviews Coach Bryant at the beginning of the 2nd half of the 1981 Alabama vs. Auburn football game. Coach Bryant went on to earn his 315th career victory that day which surpassed Amos Alonzo Stagg as the winningest college football coach in history.

I have a ton of respect for the man, where he's been, and what he's seen. But 1981 this is not. It's 2013 and it shows. It's time for him to retire.

I like Ole Verne. I prefer him calling a game over that toolbag Jesse Palmer, Pac 12 hard on Brock Huard, lifeless Danny Kennel, or those sorry women they have calling the 12:00 ESPN games. He is always in a happy modd and sounds excited to just be there. They have Gary Danielson in as the football mind, so Verne does his part very well.

Favorite tandem is Blackledge and Nessler. Followed up by Herbstreit and Mussberger. Danielson is extremely knowledgeable, but his Midwestern accent makes my butt want to braid barbed wire. For me it is as much the sound of the voice as much as the content involved. Like when I hear Doug Layton's voice, I'm immediately taken back being a 12 year old boy throwing the football in the front yard with my best friend while listening to a game on the radio on a crisp fall afternoon. I like the sound of Verne, but he does need to retire and CBS should bring back Sean McDonough.

That q & a time spent just prior to half or coming out after the half is probably the most wasted time a coach has on game day.

I'd venture to guess I saw over 100 last year and only one really stuck out to me as a fan. I'm sure he had better things to do as well. It really does nothing for the game today.

(Works really well in softball coverage.)

You know that question everyone has had to answer about people you'd have a dinner with if you could only select....

Verne? Bet ya that old man has some stories.

You're watching the football game...who the hell cares if he mispronounces a name? [/SUP]

That's a new one to me...sounds like a Midwestern phrase :)

Are you saying, hearing Gary makes your butt hurt? (serious concerns here...)

My thoughts too. I could give two cents about a guy saying somebody's name wrong or what he sounds like.
