BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- For a man honored for his past success, Mal Moore's current year couldn't get much better.
Another national title in football. Ditto, gymnastics. The men's golf team is the No. 1 seed heading into the NCAA championship and the softball team is a favorite to make waves in Oklahoma City.
For the University of Alabama athletics director, who goes into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday in a ceremony at the Birmingham Sheraton, the current wave began with a huge gamble after a floundering 2006 football season.
"When we made the change," Moore said, alluding to the dismissal of Mike Shula, "I felt we had to go after someone who had won championships."
And that choice, from the onset, was Nick Saban, formerly of LSU, then the coach of the NFL's Miami Dolphins.
