šŸˆ šŸ”„ Hot Seat 2025 / Coaching Carousel: OL Coach Kap and Alabama part ways

The Internet was in its infancy.

When Stallings retired a lot in the fan base wanted Mike DuBose as head coach. Bockrath, with the spine of a limb off of a Weeping Willow, had his fax machine inundated with fans telling him "hire Mike." With Hootie and now Stallings out of the building there wasn't a "man" around the program. Opinions, in the form of faxed letters, swayed decisions and led to DuBose getting the job.

(I think Cam put more effort into his "business decision/tackle" a few years ago for the Panthers than Bockrath spent on that coaching search. I think I've spent more energy flicking a piece of lint off of a sweater. )
So who were other candidates at the time?

That all happened so quickly. I'm finishing undergrad at the time.

I'm thinking here so bear with me as some new meds from the Dr. are slightly altering ...

Coach Stallings retired somewhere between the 23rd and 26th of November? DuBose was announced the 9th of December? Or maybe it was the 6th?

There was no search, so to speak. That's why I was attempting to be clever earlier with how lazy BB was with the hire. One of "Bear's Boys" was more of the name than an individual. Hell, a night at The Houndstooth and you'd hear Tuberville (still at MS.)

The campus was smack dab in the middle of the holidays, students and players getting ready for finals, and the retirement and subsequent hire...all in a matter of two weeks. (This is with the external influences of the NCAA on the football program at the time.)

Let there be no mistake about Bockrath. He pissed me off beyond on measure when he showed up to a Grand Slammers weekend Cook-Out wearing a starched shirt and his damn bow tie. On a Saturday, in the afternoon, watching baseball, when we are in shorts and t-shirts eating hot dogs, hamburgers, BBQ outside of R field...and that ****** comes up in a bow tie to "meet the fans."

No reason to think too much; no one knows. Hell, coaching staffs across the nation still are unsure how they'll handle aspects of the '27 class.

This begs the question. If the fans don't know, you and I included here, what's this?

If you don't know the W, how can it be an L?

Can you not look at your depth chart and look at where you are currently and learn? Now, you won't truly knkw on what you brought in and how to grade that player until mid-season.

I would say fan support for excellence should never waiver. But our expectations should be informed by things like how much more other schools are paying their players and coaching staffs. If our expectations ignore these factors then Bama will return to being a revolving door of coaches and players.
NIL $$ is indeed the variable here that somehow Bama will need to overcome. Not sure they can w/o help from some reform of the system.

If memory serves me correct. Rick Neuheisel was a name being floated that Bockrath was interested in. I have no idea if it had legs.......but I want to say that is what fired off the fax voting for Dubose. Had Brother stayed his ass put, he would have got the job and I think it would have been super interesting to see what would have happened. 1996 was there year Spurrier and UF finally won it all, and everyone wanted some offense and not what Stallings was putting on the field. He adhered to the Bear Bryant philosophy that 3 things happen when you pass the ball and two of them are bad. :ROFLMAO:

As far as Bockrath. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. His son worked at DCH hospital for a long time as an orderly/escort wheeling around patients. That dude was as weird as a 3 dollar bill.

Bockrath was a DICK!! I will never forget the night at StarkVegas when he went into the locker room demanding Coach Stallings give him an answer about his future. Stallings kicked his ass out!!

At the AFCA conference last month in Charlotte, one of the rumors going around was that several P5 teams were looking at bringing him in but that they were all a bit hesitant (to some degree) from a compliance standpoint. Good to see Maryland (apparently) going through with it and not worrying about the NCAA. Supposedly, AJ wanted him on his Stallions staff... but I don't think that was ever happening (true or not).

Any other coaching changes coming?

They still have the open TE coaching spot to fill. There will be some analyst/position assistant backfilling (which is important since they coach on the field these days). Beyond that, it’s wait and see… but I’ve not personally heard of anything imminent or definite like the change at OL coach was.

Thanks! I wonder why they haven’t filled the TE coach position. Also, we definitely need more RB production. Maybe a better OL is all we need to fix that?
