I think it's natural that we remember coaches from the last time we saw them regularly. Lupoi's work since leaving Bama in 2018 has prepared him for more:

For me, I had to guard against that in my work. I'd work with people and then we'd go our separate ways in the agency, sometimes for five, ten, fifteen years. Then, I'd either have them apply for something in my span of control, or I'd hear about them being promoted somewhere else, and I'd default to how I remembered them the last time they were near. As a check, I would always ask myself (and others in the hiring process), "Have you developed over the last X years, or have you languished? Is it fair to think that the other person hasn't developed?" It kept me grounded.

The "young" kids are moving up, and the old guys are moving along.

I agree that Hartline leaving Ohio State will have a large change to their team. Finally Bama's not the only team getting raided...Linguist seems to be staying for now. HE may still go to Oregon State but I think if Kane takes a job Bama has let him know he'd be tabbed as the DC more than likely.

Experience wise they might be ready. I remember when Saban grabbed Golding from UTSA, it was with the plan of sending him up the coaching ladder, eventually, like Smart and Pruitt, to a head coaching spot. I never heard the same about Tosh... he was mostly brought in for his recruiting prowess. The time under Saban certainly helped him develop as a defensive coach, but he struggled at it... more so than any other DC under Saban from what I gather. Ironically. it was Golding who has had to step up and help him out on game days with the calls. I do agree his additional time under Lanning at Oregon has to have been beneficial to some degree.

I view them both a bit differently though... I think Golding will be the better head coach but he's also walking into a tougher situation... not that Tosh is walking into a good one. For different reasons though, I think both will likely struggle overseeing all aspects of a program. But, if they hire and surround themselves with the right people, they could very well prove me wrong. It obviously fell in on him (predictably), but I do have to remind myself at times, even Ed Orgeron won a national title.

IMO, Penn State should have offered him a solid deal. Or Fitzgerald.
