Fans being priced out of college football should deter playoff expansion

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — There has to be a point when college football says enough.

When the College Football Playoff became reality during the 2014 season, proponents and critics alike claimed that no matter how many teams were included, there would always be the desire to make it bigger.

The Football Championship Subdivision is a perfect example. The playoff system was created in 1978 and initially had four teams. It is now 24 teams following a 10- or 11-game regular season.

The chances of the CFP adding a quarterfinal round in the near future aren’t very good since there would be scheduling issues, more damage would be done to the bowl structure and ESPN has paid $7.3 billion for the broadcast rights though 2025.

But there are two groups of people who should be against it happening, the ones usually the most overlooked.
  • The players
Anyone who followed Alabama last season knows just much of a physical toll the season can take, as the Crimson Tide still won the title despite scores of injuries, especially to the linebacker corps.

Add another game, which would essentially bridge the gap from the conference championship games (when finals are going on) and there would be less recovery time and more risk of concussions and knee injuries. A 16-game season, the same as the NFL, would take a toll, especially considering some of the players are just 18 or 19 years old.
  • The fans
This isn’t referring to the average college football fan who loves to sit before a television with the remote control every Saturday, but the core fans, the ones who pay to see the team play its games.

Ask any Crimson Tide fan about the past decade and they’ll gush with pride. But he or she will also tell you that it’s been expensive, requiring them to pick and choose more than ever.

ā€œIt’s a lot,ā€ Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne said.

Playing in a state that isn’t on par with many others economically (U.S. News and World Report has it at No. 38), Alabama doesn’t have the highest ticket prices, nor should it. Moreover, when Bryant-Denny Stadium was expanded the last time, Mal Moore made having one of the largest student seating per enrollment ratios in college football a priority.

Nevertheless, things add up, especially once you start factoring in extra games.

This year, season tickets at Bryant-Denny Stadium cost $460 each, plus a per-seat donation requirement that ranges from $60 to $4,000 every year.
The waiting list for season tickets is at approximately 34,000 people. Anyone who wants to a chance to be included in the Alabama-Notre Dame home-and-home series set for 2028-29 needs to sign up now to have a chance.

So, at minimum, two season-ticket seats will cost about $1,000 not including parking, hotel rooms, tailgating or traveling to any games away from Bryant-Denny Stadium — all of which can be incredibly expensive.

Crimson Tide fans gained a bit of financial break this past season by Alabama making the College Football Playoff without playing in the SEC Championship Game. The semifinal and title games also were within driving distance of Tuscaloosa.

But have you ever tried to get a hotel room in New Orleans for New Year’s?

For the Sugar Bowl, tickets at face value were $175 reserved and $275 at the club level. The prices jumped to $475-$675 for the National Championship Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The Crimson Tide also played there to open the season against Florida State, which was billed as being like a bowl game on Week 1. Alabama having played so many neutral-site games of late was another reason fans were so excited to see it sign to play Texas (2022-23) and Notre Dame.

ā€œYou want to make sure you find that right balance,ā€ Byrne said. ā€œYou look at the secondary market at times, they’re charging a lot more than what we charge. The goal is not to maximize that.ā€

That secondary market is where fans really take a financial hit even though in 2016 CNN Money called Alabama tickets a ā€œrelative bargainā€ as the 21st-most expensive on average in college football.

Yet according to StubHub, the average ticket price to see Alabama-Florida State in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game was $845.

With Alabama playing the hometown team, Georgia, for the title, there were upper-deck seats selling for $3,000 as the game drew comparisons to 2013 BCS Championship Game between Notre Dame and Alabama, StubHub’s highest-selling college title game.

I agree with all of this, but the folks sitting at home watching their TV will/are see the hit too. Guess where the broadcasting companies get the money to pay for the rights to show these games? That's right, those sitting at home with the cable packages. Technically I'm getting hit twice with tickets now and the DirecTV package that gives me SEC Network and everything else to make sure I can view games.

I had to go a back way to skip the waiting list, and that cost me a lot of $$$. Right now I have two tickets, but would eventually like to make my way to six to accommodate my entire family (wife, four kids, and myself). I don't even want to do the calculation on that expense. I am very fortunate to have made a lifelong friend in my neighbor when I was in Tuscaloosa, she's single, older, and loves when we come to town and stay with her. We stay for free and just take her out to dinner for offering the opportunity. I don't like the neutral games because it's hard as hell to get decent tickets at a price worth a damn and I simply cannot afford the time and price tag with four kids under the age of seven, to go along with every other expense the normal home games bring. I mean, I should be writing blank checks to the University of Alabama, because it's damn expensive, and I even get away with not having to pay lodging expenses.

Hey @BamaFan334, I agree with you. I'm sitting at home watching when I can on TV. We go to a commercials and before we get back to the game, a play has been played. What happen to those TV time out? You think that the radio is different think again, I have missed Eli more than once on plays coming back from selling something!

You know, I outta try and trade someone on here for some tickets. Trade my A&M tickets for two or four Missouri tickets so I can take the crew. Wonder if anyone here would be inclined to tussle with that idea?

Good idea.... not me but good idea and plan for someone

A few years back I went in full retire mode when it comes to neutral site games. I was sitting on Marta thinking this was a bad idea and about the time I got back to College Park, I had pretty much had enough of the wear and tear in Atlanta. I don't do away games much anyway these days but it's still worthwhile to park it at BDS for a decent SEC game. Otherwise, my HDTV is all any self-respecting Bama fans needs to be in on all the action and close to a cold one to boot. These days, it's a lot more about simple pleasures and a good blueprint for success.

Yeah. With the 7 home games. Seems enough any more. Rest on the 65ā€ HDTV with cold beer n bathroom close by.
Won’t be long til 100% are right there n the 5000$ i spend is spent elsewhere
Been going for a long time and nothing quite like it but..........

I don't even allow relatives in the man cave that aren't Bama fanatics anymore. Nobody messes with gameday. After all these years, no wasted effort.

The Playoff system was blessed last year. Oklahoma and UGA fans were happy to spend $$$$ to go to the Rose Bowl for the experience and historic event. Clemson and Alabama fans could drive to New Orleans. The National Championship game was a commuter event and very few needed a hotel room. As a result, UGA fans paid way over face value for tickets. If fans have to pay for air, hotel, meals and special events/activities, they won't be doing it in two cities - especially since getting a flight to the championship with a week's notice will cost $$$$$$$$$.

Yeah, a Playoff appearance couldn't have worked out any better in our favor. You can't beat New Orleans or Atlanta as far as traveling and atmosphere and that close to campus for a fanbase. The stars will most likely not align like that again for a long while.

Yeah but this isn't going to change anytime soon. In fact, the playoffs are just going to get more and more expensive. It's eventually going to get like the Super Bowl, where your only chance of getting a ticket for a regular person is to get a nose bleed seat.

Not as a 4 seed. That was really a miracle. The dawgs win the SEC, have a higher seed and have to travel to the Pacific coast. We skip a grueling game, get healthy because of it, then come it last on the playoff totem pole and get sent to our home away from home, The Sugar Bowl as a reward. And to top it off this is the quickest turn around title game in its history. And to think, none of that was remotely possible without the barner's contribution. That was actually our first win of the Playoffs.

2012.... Ohio State undefeated but on probation..... bama ..with one loss...gets an overrated ND
2015.....takes an onside kick and a KO return for a TD to win....
2017...after a chip shotmissed FG...then in OT with 5 true freshmen onthe field a 43 yard .....a 43 ard pass and blown coverage by one of best Ds in CF....

Yes, sir. It's really harder to win a NC than we are making it look. But I think it shows that all great teams will have close calls that sometimes defy logic. When you think about it just getting past LSU in Baton Rouge in 2012 and in 2014 was sort of a mini-miracle too. Vern and Gary didn't think we would pull either one out in real time.

I don't know why all this has happened to us, 5 NCs in 9 years is crazy, but it never gets old.

Yep....I thought the 2 in a row in 78&79 would be the high point...then 11&12 happened...tooka miracle to keep 3 in a row from happening.....in 13 and 1980...
And Deshaun in 2016.... a back to back....
Looking at roster....the 2019 team will be incredible.... if we can just do it in2018..
