Eight players are set to enroll at the University of Alabama this week including two junior college transfers. The Tide staff has seen a slew of early arrivals throughout the Nick Saban era. Many have seen significant playing with the added benefit of going through spring practice.
Five of Alabama's early enrolles are members of the Rivals100: Cameron Robinson, five-star offensive tackle from West Monroe High School in La., Laurence Jones, four-star safety from Neville High School in Monroe, La., Tony Brown, five-star cornerback from Ozen HIgh School in Beaumont, Texas, David Cornwell, four-star quarterback from North High School in Norman, Okla., and Shaun Dion Hamilton, four-star linebacker from Carver High School in Montgomery, Ala. Cameron Sims, four-star wide receiver frrom Ouachita Parish High School in Monroe, La., is not in the Rivals100 but also arriving on Monday.
Alabama also welcomes junior college teammates D.J. Pettway, four-star defensive end, and Jarran Reed, three-star defensive tackle from East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, Miss.
Zach Whitley, four-star linebacker from North Shore High School in Galena Park, Texas, was set to enroll at Alabama this week before flipping his commitment to UCLA on Friday night.
"I'm extremely excited," Robinson said about starting his career early at Alabama. "I am looking forward to getting in the playbook. I want to learn it like the back of my hand. That's what I am most looking forward to about getting up there this week."
Brown and 'Hootie' committed to Alabama last Thursday. Brown committed to Alabama during the Under Armour All-America game. He chose the Tide instead of LSU or Texas A&M. Jones decomitted from Alabama and considered a few other options especially Ole Miss. He recommitted to the Alabama after the Under Armour All-America game.
"It would be a tie between the winning tradition, because I am a winner, and the facilities," Brown said of the things he liked about Alabama. "They have facilities that make you want to be there. You can get tired some days and don't feel like working out. You see the TV screens and flat screens. You want to be there. It changes your mind about a lot of stuff."
Brown will also run track for the Tide. He plans to compete in the 110m hurdles and 4x1 relay. Track coach Dan Waters played a major role in Brown's commitment to Alabama.
"I was definitely impressed when I met with Alabama's track coach," Brown said. "I really didn't know a whole lot about Alabama's track program. Some of the athletes on my international track team were from Alabama. I got to know them well. Alabama got new coaches two years ago. Their program has risen quite rapidly."
Alabama has looked for help on the defensive front. The two junior college players also helped their team capture the national championship this past season. Pettway rejoins the Tide after he had been dismissed from the team. Reed signed with Florida last February, but had to complete more classes before enrolling. Both players have the ability to play in the fall.
"I felt like Alabama was the best place for me," said Reed. "I can become a better person and player. Everything stands out to me about their program, the football aspect and the academics, the graduation rate. It's an elite program. I want to be the best I can be. I want to play with the best."
Cornwell arrives after suffering a season-ending injury which required surgery to repair a torn ACL. The competition is a wide open at quarterback with the departure of the Tide's All-Time winningest quarterback, AJ McCarron.
"I am way ahead of schedule," Cornwell said. "I am feeling awesome. It doesn't even feel like I had surgery. The coaches are really excited. Obviously, feel close to 100-percent since I am walking now, but the doctors say I am not. I should be good for the fourth quarter program in February and ready for spring practice."
