The American Football Coaches Association has forwarded a proposal for an early signing day for college football recruits and it wil be reviewed by conference commissioners Thursday.

"We're looking for an early signing day in the third week of December," Rob Ianello, Notre Dame assistant and head of the AFCA FBS Assistant Coaches Committee, told ESPN at the coaches convention in Nashville. "There are more than 1,000 verbal committments right now, and about 15 per school. Why not sign them? Is it a reservation or a committment? What we're seeing is oversigning and late switches. An earlier signing day would also be cost effective."

Ianello said the large majority of coaches are in favor of a signing day before the traditional one, which this year will be Feb. 4.

I'm not sure this would make much difference. The basketball early period is in November and the late one is in May. Mid December would leave only about six weeks until the February day. I'd think a lot of kids would wait to sign just to get a few more visits in. Backing it up to July or August might be a good change, though. I do like the idea, however.

What the AD's/Conf's hear "Wah wah wah wah cost effective wah wah wah..."

I'm with Joe......while I do think moving it up will help some, but I think before the season gets fired up would be a better solution. It will eliminate some of the recruiting trips during the season and could make it "cost effective" yada yada yada.

Either way having an earlier signing day would be a benefit regardless.
