🏈 Early departures by year

On the defesive side, here's what I have (though this may not be 100% accurate):

2016: Ryan Anderson, Tim Williams, Marlon Humphrey, Eddie Jackson
2017: D'Ron Payne, Minkah, Ronnie Harrison
2018: Deonte Thompson, Mack Wilson, Quinnen Williams, Savion Smith

@Justneedme81, There are 13 of what we'd call contributors: starters or back-ups that have played a significant role this past season. It's a total of 25 when you consider graduation, etc. It's not new—as well all know too well—and the departures of the past rival these numbers.

Just as a comparative note and this is from last season which included both (and I"m sure I've missed someone, or two, along the way.

Sims and Foster weren't starters but they did spell the starters quite a bit. There's two.

In the defensive backfield we're looking at Fitz, Averett, Wallace, Brown, and Harrison. In the front seven we saw Evans, Frazier, SHD, and Payne leave. Now were are at 11.

On offense, we saw Ridley, Bozeman, and Scarbrough leave. Special teams was JK Scott.

Now we're at a 15.

There were 16 major contributors who left after 2016 along with three quarterbacks. There's a year with 19.

A brief glance at 2015 and I caught 15 more.

What's the difference in this season and the last couple of seasons? (Other than the worst loss of Saban's career at Bama?)

It's a shame to see so many leaving early. This is the kind of stuff that hurt Les Miles each season even more than his choice in OCs. There have been examples of great junior players sticking around for their senior season and making outstanding teams, special.

When Jonathan Allen decided to come back for his senior season that was highly unusual. Ryan Anderson, Tim Williams, Eddie Jackson, Reuben Foster and OJ Howard all declared they too were coming back for their senior year. What was most amazing to me about these declarations was the fact Alabama had just beaten Clemson for the national championship.

Last season's Jawja team had the same sacrifice and was senior-laden and went to the championship game. This year's Clemson team had 1st round juniors who decided to invest another year for the natty push.

In short, we can overcome losses when juniors leave in bunches, but it's hard to be special.
