🏈 Doug Nussmeier?

Also ask yourself what kind of talent he had at Washington to mak those improvements. I dont care who they bring in. Whoever it is is gonna have some of the best talent in the country. If you cant win on the offensive side with the #1-3 recruiting class every year and always getting the ball on the 50 something is definitely wrong. I aint sweatin it and neither should you.

From a ranking of #106th to #63 with a bump in the road at #38? Yes, that is improvement.

Why pick out that one thing? Especially, considering it is our running game!

Mr. Congeniality! Coming from you, that's the highest form of praise.

You're very welcome.

It was highlighted red and that was why it was picked out.

Two things jump out at me. One, he worked under Pat Hill. The second is making me pause just a minute and think...and it's not doing any good. Notice his time at Michigan State? Our last director of football operations was a Spartan at that time, wasn't he?

One thing I'd dare say. There are enough threads crossed in Saban's and Nuss's career that he has to know what he's getting into.

OK, never mind Bran, I found the answer.

I was thinking of Mike Vollmar, the former Director of Football Operations at UA. He's the one Pannunzio replaced, right?

He was the DFO at Michigan State when Saban was there as well as when Nuss was there as QB coach. I'm sure Vollmar and Saban have talked just as I'm sure Nuss and Vollmar have spoken.

My point? Nuss knows what he's getting into in terms of time, dedication, responsibilities, his "position," etc...

Nuss not only will be replacing Jim McElwain on a coaching staff for the second time, but the two served three years together on the same Michigan State staff from 2003-05. McElwain was the assistant head coach and coached wide receivers and special teams. Also on that coaching staff was Jeff Soutland, who coached the Spartans' offensive line from 2000-2006.

The more I read/hear about Nussmeier, the more I think he's the man for the job...seems like he's right up Saban's alley.

I was in the same boat. I normally don't go to the point researching guys like I did Nuss but that Michigan State thought opened a wormhole.

I'm glad a did.

Consider this. Lance is returning to Alabama for the third time. Nuss is here for the first time and has friendships on the staff that are longer than those Lance has.

Continuity.

Lance still has friends? On our staff?

Late to the party I know but I don't think it is a bad hire. He's made Marc Bulger look like a pro bowl QB, coached in Pat Hill's system and coached Jake Locker. He's a good QB coach and it isn't like calling plays in Bama's offense is horribly sophisticated and imagine the possibilities when Saban let's him get more creative in bigger games...

I heard a couple of analysts this year that would disagree with you about Alabama's offense not being sophisticated. No, they don't give you as many looks as the defense but they sure kept LSU guessing defensively in the BCS game.

Yes, one game that happened to be a rematch. My point is there isn't a lot of mystery to your offense. They're going to have a stiff running game and a controlled passing attack. They're going to run their plan until you prove you can stop it, so to speak. Of course their game plan changed in a rematch.

But, by and large there isn't a lot of surprise, it is a system that is run very effectively. With the backs and lineman you guys have had, why would you need a sophisticated offense? It isn't a knock to say that in my opinion it isn't a sophisticated attack. Clearly it's working.

Sophisticated is definitely the wrong word. It's a basic pro-style offense.

However, it's foolish to say—not implying you are—that there isn't a large learning curve leaving the QB position at the high school level and then learning a pro-style attack. Heck, the terminology may be the biggest obstacle to start and then we are moving on to defensive reads.

In JPW's last season, he said the biggest problem Greg was having was reading the defensive fronts. This was in the skel drills the summer of '09 when JP had a few days off and spent them around campus watching drills.

Yet, Greg threw four INT's that year.

Changing the subject slightly...

Malzahn's offense is as far from complicated as it can be. Yes, a lot of different formations but it was basically a playbook that contained less than 10 offensive plays.

Terry, I never compared it to Gus' offense. Relevant to pre-snap reads loads of offenses are far more sophisticated than his. His worth is in the blocking scheme and actual play set-up.

My analogy...just a reference point for some if needed.

Fair enough.

Can't call the play calling sophisticated when you use numbers and pictures of Cam or Obama. The Obama play sucked....
