First and foremost. I prefer eating at the bar at most places. If not the actual, bar, I'm good eating at a high-top. So, if I've got a ball cap on and want a steak: put me at the bar.

But...sit down dinner with friends? I've no issues with running my fingers through my hair to calm the extrodianarly attractive disheleved look a bit.

Thoughts?

It's been about two years since I've been there, but Ray's on the River in Atlanta has a sign posted on the counter as you enter the restaurant that includes all of those things you mentioned, including any strong smell of marijuana.

There are plenty of places you can go if you want to be casual, dress like you're at the beach, and - I guess - reek of weed. However, businesses can keep you from bringing that ambiance into their place. I do think that there is a "I'll do what I want and you can deal with it" attitude prevalent in regard to the really stinky stuff.

It's not just the high end dining places. Funny how some cry racist (this article) vs. the following article:

Can't say that I have any issues with private places having whatever standards they choose. They can choose to have them and I can choose whether or not to go. It ain't the dress code that keeps me out of Ruth's Chris, it's the steaks.

Never been, but I wouldn't have any problem with taking off my hat/cap. I do it almost anyway. I leaned early about going to the table without a cap or a shirt on. Specially at my grand parent table.

Their business...their rules. You either comply, or you go somewhere else. It really is that simple.

I don't allow smoking in my home. Don't like it? Don't come to my house. It's that simple. Also, if we all go out to eat as a family (especially if I'm paying for everyone) I don't put up with people having their phones out or placing them on the table. Put them away and respect the people that are sitting at the table with you. Have an actual conversation, face-to-face, NOT through text messages. OR, you can pay for your own meal (again, if I'm the one paying for everyone).

Just like last Saturday. I took my sister and younger niece out to eat for their birthday. I let them pick the place. When we were sitting there, none of us had our phones out. We just talked to each other and ate our food. I looked around the restaurant (as I always do) and noticed no less then 15 other people sitting there with their face buried in their phone while sitting at a table with other people. It's insanely disrespectful and I don't put up with it from our group. No, I'm not their dad. But if I'm paying, then my rules apply. Does that make me the asshole? Maybe...possibly...probably. But that's just the way it is. I was brought up that if you eat as a family, then you treat each other with enough respect to talk to each other as you're sitting there at the same table.

Absolutely, the marijuana is the most offensive, and the newest prohibition to dress code lists. You gave a list of rules, hard for me to know what you're thinking. The weed stench seems to be what's in the news these days. Having to dress nicer for a nicer restaurant has been the standard for decades.

The weed stench seems to be what's in the news these days. Having to dress nicer for a nicer restaurant has been the standard for decades.

It isn't a big deal with me which "rule" you centered on. I found it interesting that was what you locked in on. As often as you reference the enticing aroma I honestly wonder where the hell are you going? Literally, I've never had an instance where I've passed someone and the fragrance was overwhelming.

But again. The smell fades. That nasty looking 'ho' at the next table? Yeah. I'd rather not take the only solution; eating in the dark.

I reminds me a bit of what it was like eating out during Covid. I ran into one place to grab a bite to go and was told I could come in without a mask. I went to the next place; screw that. The same outfit, same owner, had another location a few miles up the street with no such restrictions.

I say that to say this. IF for some reason I don't care for the "restrictions/rules" I'll just go somewhere else. I'm with @Krimson I guess. It's my way or I'm taking the highway ... somewhere else. THAT being said...

Five or so years ago you would have to have a dinner jacket to eat at Penisula Grill. They even had jackets to "lend." They've since dropped that (around COVID's first impositions.) I'd wear a light jacket because I KNEW what they required. The last time I was there, maybe two years ago, I was 'dress' shorts and an untucked button down. No big deal with me there. Inversely, I was at FIG and saw a few ladies fresh from the beach; bikini tops on two. They were allowed...and should have been stopped at the door. While a pot smell would have faded with those ladies, the only thing I wanted faded that afternoon...the lights.

On this same line of thinking ... reminded me of a bar I used to stop in after work. They started a new rule that, I believe, was "no tank tops." I think that is what it was. All I remember clearly was his intent was to keep some out of the bar and by that rule it eliminated people that...say, like to wear NBA jerseys. The two things I remember for certain. It was 2006. And, the underlying result of the dress code was intended, and successfully, removed a type of clientele from the bar: a certain ethnicity more than others.
