🏈 Do we really want a heisman to come to the Capstone?

I've struggled w/ this question simply b/c Heismans almost always bust either in future college ball or NFL (not always). Also, many times the Heisman winner that enters the NC game usually loses.

Any opinions?

by now it's just another of our traditions....

we are Alabama and don't need no stinkin heisman....we win championships as a team not as a group of individuals.

This is the same thing I posted when this question was posed a couple of days ago:

I find nothing wrong with the Heisman except for the politics that are behind the awarding of the trophy sometimes. There have been deserving players that have won the award and there are some deserving players that have not (Peyton Manning comes to my mind).

The Lombardi, Butkus, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm, etc. have all been won by Alabama players in the past and I have no problem with any of them even though they are individual awards. I am not going to lie, I would like that stinking trivia question removed from the AFLAC data base. The Heisman is part of your team's football legacy. Everyone knows that the player who wins had to have a team surrounding him that allowed him to achieve greatness.......with the exception of Tebow of course! :lance: He did it all by himself.

While I certainly would like for Ingram to have the award, I don't like the fact of how much attention it garners. Now he has shown nothing but respect regarding the attention and has responded by talking about his team thus far but personally I would feel much better about it if he stated something along the lines of " While I appreciate the attention being focused on my individual numbers right now, I can not do that on my own and there is 100+ other players that all play a role on this team. That said I will not be answering any more questions regarding the Heisman until after the season"

I dont think that a Heisman and an NC have to be mutually exclusive. I'd rather an NC over a Heisman anyday of course, but I'd love it for Mr. Mark Ingram to bring it home to the Capstone. I won't be heart broken if he doesnt, but he sure deserves it in my book. The guy has heart!

I'm torn on the issue, simply b/c this is such a team sport, but bamafan4ever blew the individual award(s) issue out of the water (very good point).

I think we all could agree that we'd take NC over a Heisman everyday & twice on Saturday's but we cannot know the outcome until both have passed.

I guess it comes down to the issue that no Heisman if it means taking a loss b/c that slaps in the face what Alabama is all about.

My wish:

Ingram wins the Heisman, & at the acceptance speach he states that he deeply respects this award but cannot accept this award simply b/c he cannot get a yard w/o his team mates. Therefore, he hands it over to the runner up & leaves the ceremony.

Then they go on to stomp the snot outta USC (Heisman U) in the NC at the Rosebowl.

On the one hand I would be thrilled for Mark if it happened, but on the other hand I don't want the school doing anything to promote him for it. If he won it within the team concept that would be awesome.

Sure I would want an Alabama player to receive a Heisman. The logic behind not wanting it to come to Alabama by some is very weak, even superstitious.

I feel that media bias is the primary reason no Bama player has won it yet anyway. The fact that USC, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Michigan,and Notre Dame, have so many just goes to show that it has been primarily a popularity contest. If Bama finally wins a popularity contest...so be it. In fact, Alabama SHOULD have one already.

Shaun Alexander? Joe Namath? Kenny Stabler? Bobby Humphrey? David Palmer?...Bueller...Bueller...Bueller...

The best would be to 1. go undefeated in the SEC 2. Have Ingram win the Heisman 3. Then win the BCS That would be the biggest banner year in Alabama history. A 14 win season/A BCS MNC/ A Heisman winner ..in one season when none have ever been done before.

I guess I will never truly understand why people dont want the award. I get the quotes from Bryant, but he wasnt implying he didnt want the players to win one - they just didnt worry about it. Grozas, Outlands, etc. are great awards for players and are great recruiting tools. Id say that we have the only fanbase on earth that actually discusses this.

I would love it as long as a National Championship came along with it, other wise a Title is all I care about which is what I'm sure Ingram, Julio, Ro, and everyone else thinks and in fact Ingram has said it.

I've seen a handful fall into that category the last few weeks. But, it's my thought that if it came down to it and we had a player that was in serious consideration for the award you'd see the support from one and all.

NO! At Alabama we tend to think of football as a team sport.

The Heisman does not end up selecting the Best College Gootball Player as it claims. When marketing your player off the field becomes a must, you now have a Beauty Pagent. The Heisman is the stamp of popularity.

Question: If Ingram were to win it, would he surpass all the Alabama greats that preceeded him? If he did not win it, would he be any less great than if the Touchdown Club of New York thought was the best in the land?

The fact is, regardless of how you feel about it, the Heisman Trophy is a very prestigious award and Alabama deserves, and has deserved in the past, to win one. Winning Heismans has not stopped any other schools from continuing to win national championships. If Ingram deserves it, let him win it.

Furthermore, I want to see some legends surpassed. If our current players start surpassing legends, it means we are playing at a higher level and winning again. The records are meant to be broken if you want to continue to be relevant.

One I'd like to see passed, but there's a good chance it won't be, is Thomas' tackles from losses in '88. That 39 number is going to be a tough one to beat.

Bobby Humphrey's single season rushing record could be in jeopardy this year. Ingram has five games to put 566 plus if he wants to do that in the regular season. Bobby had his yards in 12 games.

I don't see any problem with bringing the Heisman to T-Town. I see Mark as a level headed kid that won't allow anything to distract him. The school doesn't have to promote it since we are in the spotlight as it is. I think Mark would be the first to say that winning the NC is the ultimate prize that he is focused on but he wouldn't mind picking up a little hardware on the way to winning it all.
