šŸˆ Did Cochran just take credit for 6 National Championships & 36 1st RD draft picks? Did he recruit them? Was he in film study? On-field position?

Whew..... Why Scott Cochran left Alabama for UGA

It was part of growing friction between Saban and Cochran that seemed to come to a head around that point. Cochran was mentally ready to leave after the Ole Miss situation. Saban, meanwhile, had concerns about numbers and results from a strength and conditioning standpoint and wanted tweaks made to the program. Sources said Saban began ā€œriding Cochran mercilessly in front of staff."

At this point, Cochran was even more determined to find an on-field opportunity elsewhere. Cochran pursued job opportunities with Michigan State and the New York Giants but neither worked out, per sources.

Appears Kiffin wanted someone a little more experienced. Probably a good idea for him there as he probably needs to start winning quickly and keep them in that 8-10 wins a season area if possible. No need in giving up points on ST with your guy learning on the job if you can help it. .

So.... Kiffin offered him the job then decided against it? Or Cochran just wanted the job and Kiffin didn't want him?

I'm confused

Not sure anyone other than those 2 are 100% sure. Some say Kiffin offered Cochran but someone stopped it. Others say Kiffin talked to him about it but ultimately decided to go another way. What little I have heard makes me lean more toward that latter version and either Kiffin did offer S&C but Cochran did not want it or Kiffin did not offer at all because Cochran only wanted on field.

@Tidestalker, in the end Kiffin and Cochran are no different than Cochran and Joe Judge, or Cochran and Mel Tucker. With Kiffin and Ole Miss look at it from a football perspective, only for a minute, and you can see he made the right call.

One, if you're in Lane's shoes and looking at a few resumes for your Special Teams gig who do you pick? Are you going with Scott or Chris Partridge? Partridge is a no brainer here especially considering his success on the recruiting trail...and then there's actual experience as a ST coach.

If we look at Ole Miss and Scott in terms of S&C what do we have? We have Kiffin looking at a guy who had received a "bad review," so to speak, when Saban had some NFL personnel in to review the S&C department. Here's a guy looking for a job where his last place of employment, Bama in this situation, isn't up to par on where the head coach wants his S&C department to be. (I find it odd that SC chose to pursue jobs with former Bama coaches he's worked with and didn't consider the possibility that the very thing that was an issue in Tuscaloosa wouldn't be known.)

So, back to Kiffin's shoes ....

Experienced vs inexperienced with Scott and Chris.
Outdated S&C methods versus where S&C programs are moving (to a more whole body/whole health approach.)

Very enlightening. Thank you for sharing this. Had no clue about the review.

His pursuit of a on-field job with former Alabama coaches was his only option. He could use friendship instead of experience in pursuing a role. His S&C experience/performance means nothing. He needed someone to give him a chance to change what he does with no experience in doing it.

Thank you TP! Makes sense.

I have to say though, it's almost like clockwork how all of the negative light is shed after someone leaves. Never heard a peep about any of this while SC was here.... Aside from a few petty fans complaining about the track record of serious injuries. Some of us have pointed towards the way certain NFL people view Bama players.... The Broncos being one who under Elway refuses to draft Bama. 9 Years straight, not 1 dude!

Ultimately a testament to how buttoned up CNS keeps the program. He does a great job of keeping the issues out of the spotlight, which is really hard in 2020.

He had to in order to short circuit the process. Otherwise he would have to go down a level to a lower division or even high school to get a chance. Kirby either becomes the genius who saw the diamond where Saban saw inexperience or becomes the guy who took a chance that didn't work out. UGA fans will try to sell it as a win either way.

UGA fans will try to sell it as a win either way.
We will do the same. All fan bases try to find the positive. I personally believe it will be a win for both. Yes Cochran is a greenhorn on Special Teams. Others will help him. Between the ears I believe it will help the UGA players have someone like Cochran around to reinforce behaviors and values that it takes to win the big one. Will it be enough? Time will tell.

On the Bama side rebooting the S&C program to align with new advances will be a win. The players will initially miss their relationship with Cochran. It will be up to the new guy to make them feel comfortable with him which I expect will happen.

His pursuit of a on-field job with former Alabama coaches was his only option.

After what's been termed as "outdated," and his only recourse in Alabama with the program, you're spot on.

Or settled for a role at a smaller school to learn positions. Several options on the table, follow the most lucrative, right?

His role, and what it meant, are two different things when it comes to where things are moving.

Smaller schools don't pay $500K to a special teams coach.
