LSU and Florida staged one of the greatest games in SEC regular season history less than five years ago on CBS at night in front of the biggest Tiger Stadium crowd (92,910) in history at the time. The Tigers were No. 1 and headed to their second national championship in four years. The Gators were No. 9 and coming off one national title with another one just a year away. As far as modern offensive tastes, this one was better than No. 1 LSU's 7-3 win over No. 3 Ole Miss in 1959 on the Billy Cannon punt return and No. 1 LSU's survival of No. 2 Alabama last season "I put together."
Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, who would win the Heisman Trophy two months later, rushed for 158 yards and threw two touchdowns. LSU quarterback Matt Flynn threw for 144 yards, while tailback Jacob Hester gained 106. The teams totaled 705 yards.
Three times, LSU trailed by 10 before outlasting the Gators with a 14-0 shutout in the fourth quarter for a 28-24 win. Miles was at his best, going for it on fourth-and-short five times and making it five times. It was not luck. It was daring and knowing the moment.
"That was a game for the ages," LSU defensive end Tyson Jackson said. "Those are the types of games that you come to LSU to play. At one point, it wasn't even about football anymore. The game was about if we could prove that we had a heart the size of our bodies."
LSU's website called it "arguably the most exciting game ever played in LSU's storied Tiger Stadium."
Just two years later, No. 4 LSU and No. 1 Florida formed the highest ranked pairing in Tiger Stadium since the LSU-Ole Miss game of '59, and CBS was there at night again. This game, won 13-3 by Florida, still holds the Tiger Stadium attendance record at 93,129.
Two of LSU's most treasured victories of all time happened at night on national television against Florida — on Oct. 11, 1997, when the No. 14 Tigers upset No. 1 Florida 28-21 as the goal posts came down and the 28-24 win on Oct. 6, 2007. Five of the last six LSU-Florida games have featured a top-five team. Three of the last six meetings have featured a No. 1 team with LSU No. 1 twice. And the winner of three of the last six has gone on to win the national championship.
And some LSU officials do not want to keep this series going?
