🏈 Delaney suggests committee could tweak rankings

Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delaney says the College Football Playoff selection committee could be better served grouping teams in tiers rather than ranking them early in the season.

''It seemed to me there are some rankings that are fairly clear,'' Delaney said Wednesday at the Intercollegiate Athletics Forum, sponsored IMG and Sports Business Journal in Manhattan. ''But more often than not you have insufficient data points.''

Delaney said he wants to hear from the selection committee first before making any decisions about changes.

Selection committee chairman and Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long says the 12-member committee will meet in April and discuss possible recommendations for changes to the selection process, though he doesn't expect to suggest wholesale changes

Probably thinking that instead of having them actually ranked 1-25 they could have them split into larger groupings. For example, maybe Top 10, Next 10, Last 5 where you don't know who is each individual number but they are sure these are the best 10 teams in the nation. I think his response is more about TCU being in the top 4 and winning but dropping out in favor of Ohio State. With a Tiered system nobody would know TCU was in the Top 4 or not until the final rankings.

I actually have no problem with the way the committee handled it. They said from the get go it was a weekly measure and each week it starts over again. NOW, I don't personally know if the human brain can function like that and forget everything in the past and make judgement based on one performance after having a few others to go off of from before and engrained in your memory. But if TCU and Baylor had a tougher schedule, they never would have to have been worried about falling out of the picture the last weekend. Look at us and Oregon. Played a good schedule, had one loss each, and as long as we won, we knew our résumé would hold up. Baylor and TCU played crappy schedules and had to worry if just winning would be enough. I understand schedules for this season have been in place for a few years, but hopefully this will change prospective when it comes to scheduling. I think the SEC can still rely on a tough conference schedule plus the addition of a Power 5 opponent to work for it when consideration is given. Big 12 and 10 right now, not so much.

Which flies directly in the face of how they were going to be transparent.

And that still doesn't explain the TCU/Baylor storyline...

True, but I think the résumé was the reason for that. In a game that close and one that TCU was way ahead in, you have to wonder if the committee saw it as an anomaly in it all. Baylor's schedule was worse than some Texas high school schedules, and their loss was to a four loss team. Yeah, I totally understand head to head and common sense would put them ahead of Baylor, but the basis for which the committee makes their decision doesn't look at it like that. They both almost lost to crappy teams, so in the end the scheduling appears to be the difference. But this also poses the question, is being hot late in the season reason for a bump? Remember Georgia back in 2008 I think it was? It happens. In the end, we should have stayed with the BCS computers and let them pick four.

TCU at least scheduled a Power 5 team - Minnesota. Baylor on the other hand continues to schedule really bad teams for the next few years.

With regards to the TCU/Baylor game, there was a questionable call at the end of the game...I'm not one who complains about calls after a game is final, but think its worth noting in this case.

Oregon's loss at home to Arizona early in the year doesn't look as bad now, considering Arizona won the south division.

I personally hate the idea of playing FCS teams and think it shouldn't be allowed. I'd also like to see the SEC move to a 9 game conference schedule. I believe in the future this will be used against us when it counts most.

I wonder if as many people outside of the SEC think Mike Slive is a dick as people outside the B1G do with Jim Delaney?
