WTHR's Bob Kravitz is reporting the NFL is investigating whether the New England Patriots illegally deflated footballs during the team's AFC Championship game against the Colts Sunday night.

Deflated footballs are easier to throw and catch, especially in the stormy conditions that threatened the area. Officials caught USC illegally deflating footballs in 2012, and fined the school.

Kravitz says officials took a ball out of play to weigh it, and that if the Patriots are found guilty of tampering with the balls they will lose draft picks—similar to the team's punishment for 2007's Spygate.

"The investigation into whether the Patriots were playing with deflated footballs during the AFC Championship Game was triggered after an interception by Colts linebacker D’Qwell Jackson in the second quarter, reports Bob Glauber ofNewsday.

With the Patriots already leading 14-0 and driving towards another score, Jackson picked off a Tom Brady pass that was intended for Rob Gronkowski just short of the goal line.

When Jackson returned to the sideline with the ball, he gave the ball to someone on the Colts equipment staff who noticed that the ball might be underinflated, according to the report. That staff member notified Colts head coach Chuck Pagano, and Colts leadership notified the NFL. The league then made the officials aware of the issue at halftime."

This whole thing is just a joke in my opinion.

With the way the NFL rules have been going (more points, more excitement), I'm surprised nobody has responded with...maybe the NFL needs to look at reducing their PSI requirement to help create more excitement...

From what I've read (not sure on the accuracy of this), when D'Qwell Jackson intercepted Brady, he noticed something, gave it to someone on the Colts sideline, this info was escalated up to the chain to the HC, GM, then to the NFL Director of Ops. The interception was in the 2nd Quarter and the game was still close.

So basically everyone is making this out as a Patriots issue, when in fact it seems more like a NFL issue. If they knew about this prior to half, what did they do to resolve it?

Twelve game balls are chosen by Brady. One game ball is taken out for early, early warm-up, maybe by a kicker or someone wanting to throw the ball around. Pretty common. That one ball gets cold from being outside.

Then, all twelve balls are inflated to the proper pressure and taken for use in the game. The cold weather affects the warmer balls, causing lesser pressure. The only ball up to snuff is the one that was already cold from being outside.

Seems plausible to me. Physics experts, what is the effect of the cold weather on football air pressure?

Bill Nye and several other scientists have debunked this, given the warm temperatures that day.
