🏈 Defensive adjustments for 2015

Last year, we obviously had issues stopping the hurry up. I've also noticed issues with subs. Has the defense been practicing for the HUNH/spreads more actively this camp?

In my opinion the defense is being built to stop the spread/ hunh offenses and the "challenge " will be for a lighter quicker defense to also stop the Arky/LSU type offenses also.

Saban has said less specialization and situational packages and more versatile players.

All that is subjective as Bama will still field some absolute beasts at their response positions.

We still have da fatty package lol if we have subs allowed.

The subs come from the sideline. If you flash a card to the defense, you'll have players coming off but nobody going in.

The biggest issue I've seen with defensive substitutions is that 3-4 guys will go in and sub but then there will be the one late sub and there is uncertainty over who the late sub is taking out and this translate to somebody getting set late.

We completely changed our SC for DL. They are quicker, lighter and of course pissed.

There are two guys in the rotation I'd call lighter and that's two of a group that's considered three deep.

If you look at '09, there's no Cody in '15. Hand and Pettway are the outliers. The majority of the line in '15 are cut from the same type "body mold" as Deaderick, or Zo Washington. On the line, there's not as much difference in size as some think. There is difference in athletic ability, talent, etc.

I don't see as much change as some would lead you to believe as I see this ...

I mostly agree. The big boys are still really big, just more athletic.

Except technically guys like Tim Williams, Rashaan Evans, and Christian Miller are basically D Lineman. I know they are listed as LB's, but what % of the time will Tim Williams be rushing the passer or containing the edge as opposed to dropping in coverage? Probably about 99% lol

Our 3-4 "DE's" are all guys who move inside on pass situations to make room for the previously listed. I think that position will be much quicker and athletic compared to the days of Hubbard/Dickson and even Devall.

We're on the same page. I realize it's semantics, but I tend to look at Saban's defense as its base even with the percentage played in nickel, dime, etc.

Outside linebackers, and the type of kid they are recruiting for the position(s), has changed a bit. The change there is not only in personnel, but coaching philosophy. It's my belief we'll see a significant difference from those positions this fall.

I hope so! I think that OLB spot is fixin to get back to play making. Dickson and Anderson both did a nice job last year... Devall and Hubbard in years past, eh....

The other spot I'm looking forward to big improvement is Star. Jarrick did a decent job in run support, but coverage wasn't his strong suit. Minkah Fitz or Mo Smith could bring more to the table this year IMO

@uagrad93 and I have had a few conversations about the STAR and MONEY position. I've been a fan of having a cornerback playing in both positions for a good while now, literally. I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do with what's essentially a nickel package with all corners.

Now that I think about it ... we may have to wait until week three to see much of that grouping.

During the scrimmage, Cyrus and Hump held the 1 CB positions while Fitz was in on Nickel and Harrison dime, Harrison shared reps with Mo Smith. I believe they want to see who is the best there while Fitz is secure.
