📝 December Recruiting- 15 in, three committed, with roughly 8 spots left

BTW, based on the track record of that high school and what they've done with kids in the past...combined with the fact they didn't send UA sufficient transcripts...and the fact he did have a LOI in front of him ... using his story is a bad example here.

However, the chances of that happening, with this high school?

Things get spun a lot of ways. Just a few weeks ago his commitment was accepted, right?

And if the HS is so good at getting kids though, we should have let him sign. :-)

You spin things a lot of ways, no doubt. :naughtydevil: Hell beau, I'm still laughing--and likely won't let you forget--at how you were criticizing Saban's use of grey shirts using an Auburn player as example.

I've posted what the issue was with him signing this week or in February. With limited numbers, if you think they should have accepted his sig not knowing if he would qualify? We're on two separate sides of the fence here. Combined with the track record of that high school screwing up transcripts with eligibility matters and the fact they did so with the 'scripts they'd already sent to Bama?

The Auburn player was simply pointing out that Saban (and other coaches) extend an offer and don't tell kids it's no longer good until they've caused some public embarrassment. Clearly happened multiple times The early signing period simply forces coaches to be up front earlier in the process to kids that want to commit at that date. Surely you can understand that premise.

And if you're still laughing, imagine the humor I found in your OJ Smith theory... The old "eligible overnight" case where Saban goes from telling a kid his grades aren't good enough to be in the class, then allowing him to sign the next day after being called out publicly. Now maybe Saban actually graded his extra credit assignment? Or maybe he was in direct contact with the geometry teacher that re graded an old quiz? Or maybe your story doesn't add up... I dunno.

Alabama DT commit O.J. Smith to delay signing (reports, updated)

O.J. Smith changes plans again, signs with Tide after flirting with Mississippi State (Alabama signee profile)

Back to this case though - What are the consequences if the kid doesn't qualify after signing in the early period? I genuinely don't know. I'm guessing their LOI is moot at the school is allowed to fill a spot. If not and the spot is dead, then I completely understand not taking his sig.

Uh, no. He was committed to Auburn for almost a year before that NSD. There was no drama there.

Saban wasn't called out publicly. A little truth always adds value to humor.

I'm a little curious how you find humor in me stating he was asked to grey shirt because they didn't believe he'd qualify academically...when, you've linked an article that states:

According to Rivals.com's Andrew Bone, Smith was told by Alabama that he did not meet his academic requirements and was asked to grayshirt.

I learned of OJ's situation from people other than Bone. And, since I don't trust a lot of what Bone has to say, I'll use him as an example of the "blind squirrel / nut" scenario.

If a kid signs a LOI, and doesn't qualify, the school/signee loses that spot. Remember, it's a cap of 25, solid, now. Here's something else to consider. "Any non-qualifier whose initial full-time collegiate enrollment occurs at a conference institution shall be permanently ineligible for practice, competition, and athletically-related financial aid at all conference institutions." If he doesn't qualify he won't be able to play in the SEC. How's that good for the kid?

The Auburn kid was going to originally announce for Alabama... That day found out his offer wasn't good. Stirred up a lot of drama... I remember watching it. You don't?

Bigger point is an early signing day forces coaches to be honest earlier. Big picture stuff that doesn't matter to blind fans, but is pretty humiliating to a family that takes a coach at his word and hears nothing different.

As far as OJ Smith - Be careful about trashing Bone too much. You and him had the same take. But I've yet to hear an explanation on how OJ Smith goes from not having the grades to be in Nick Saban's class and being asked to grey shirt... To magically having the grades the next day (and ultimately enrolling on time)? By all means... Enlighten me :popcorn2:

And I agree if the kid doesn't qualify it's not good for the him. I'll guess he's on track if UGA took that risk. Kirby learned from Saban.

I might be out there in left field with this, but as I examine our recruiting as well as our returning roster, I can't help but notice the surplus of OLBs right now and scarce numbers inside at DT. I just wonder if Saban is going to ask some of our OLBs (e.g., Jennings, Allen, Parks) to add some bulk and move them to DE. And then ask some of our thicker DEs (e.g., Buggs, Davis, Williams) to prepare for more reps inside next season.

Anyone know?

You're off base here. If there was so much drama about a kid committing to Auburn and he's "Saban'd" to boot...I'm sure you can find a link, somewhere.

Meanwhile ... I'll go back to watching football.

You're talking about one kid about of what, 250? And you make it sound like it's an epidemic when in reality it appears it's just the horse you chose to ride to it dies.

My point, since you missed it, is his credibility wasn't all that back in '11. He'd just gotten his feet wet under Kirk for a few years before moving on to Rivals. Even he knew there were grade issues. I know what was said to him. And, if Bone is saying the same thing? That's like MSNBC and FOX reporting the same angle.
