ESPN College Gameday analyst David Pollack believes that the Alabama Crimson Tide won’t be able to win a national championship with Blake Sims as the starting quarterback. The former Georgia linebacker weighed in on Alabama’s current quarterback situation, backing former Florida State transfer Jacob Coker as the best candidate for the Tide’s starting job.

ā€œI don’t think Blake Sims is talented enough,ā€ Pollack said. ā€œAlabama won’t win a national championship with Sims at quarterback. He’s not talented enough to win a title. I think it has to be Jacob Coker. If you saw A&M week one, they’re going to score points…You better be able to put up points and throw downfield.ā€

Pollack has been vocal of his support of Coker throughout the quarterback competition. In an appearance at the Arians Family Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic this past June, Pollack called Coker the ā€œmost talented quarterbackā€ of the Saban era.

ā€œYou can go ahead and hand it (the starting job) to him,ā€ Pollack said. ā€œIf you’ve seen Jacob Coker throw a football — I saw him this spring inTallahassee, it’s ridiculous. He can spin it better than any quarterback Nick Saban’s had at Alabama. It’s not even close, including AJ McCarron.ā€

Alabama is expected to play both quarterbacks as an ā€œopen auditionā€ Saturday against West Virginia, with Sims as the starter.

CBSSports.com reported Tuesday that Alabama planned to use two quarterbacks similarly to 2011, when starter A.J. McCarron split time with Phillip Sims.

This is my take on Pollack, he an UGA boy for one. If he knew more that the coaching staff than he would be coaching not talking about football.

Actually, I think he is right. I believe his point is that our offense must be able to score a great deal because we face at least 3 HUNH teams this year. I believe he is saying that Coker has a more legitimate throwing arm, especially on mid to long balls, which forces the defense to respect that pass. We all know we have amazing RBs, but if the defense knows our QB is not a legitimate deep ball threat, they will just stack the box.

Having said that, it would appear that Coker is not fully up to speed on the playbook. My guess is that by the 4th game, we will see Coker as the regular starter.

McElroy's debut was against Number 7 Virginia Tech, and his stats were almost identical, though with throws downfield. McCarron's first start resulted in a 49-7 victory. His yardage total was almost identical with Bama running the ball with success.

Agreed about the defense.

So Simms Stats were almost identical to both QB's & he cannot be the QB of a NC team? You guys are grasping at straws.

He beat out Coker & everyone else. Did you guys see the graphic summary of what CNS wanted out of QB? It had nothing to do w/ arm strength & ability to scramble. Why is that? If Coker wins out later, I have no issues with that but Simms throws over 250 yards & makes some great plays, makes a few bad throws & we are ready to throw the baby out with the bathwater. I just don't get it.
