I do not yet know what it is like to lose my father(hope it isn't for some years) but I do know what it is like to lose my mother. I am close to my dad but nowhere as close as I was to my mom(yeah, momma's boy here). Dad worked as a millwright in Rome, GA(Ga Kraft), Birmingham(US Steel), Scottsboro(TVA Bellefonte) and Athens, TN(Bowater) for most of my childhood. All but the TVA job, he was gone all week and came home on weekends(had a travel trailer).
I spent much more time with my mom. She was a bigger sports fan than he was, possibly because of me(all 4 of my older brothers were out of the house by the time I was 6 yo). In most sports, she would pick one team, I picked the rival. Bama and the Raiders were our only common rooting interest. She was a Celtics fan, me a Lakers fan(Bird vs Magic), she was a Redskins fan, me a Cowboys fan(I liked Tom Landry, reminded me of Bryant), she was a Braves fan, I was a Dodgers fan(I liked both Lasorda and Valenzuela). The only teams she kept watching after I quit caring about any pro sports was Bama and the Braves, which really makes me think it was just because of me that she watched the NFL and NBA. I lost her 7 years ago and I still wish I could call her every day.
