šŸˆ Dabo on a 12 team playoff: There aren't 12 teams good enough? He's right.

"I knew when it went to four, it was going to become all about the playoff, and when it goes to 12, it's going to become more about the playoff, but it's inevitable," Swinney said. "Some people will say, 'Well you've been in the playoff. If we can get in with four, we're going to get in with 12.' Our odds aren't going to go down, so it's not about that.

"Our team isn't for it. They don't want to play more games. And to be honest with you, I don't know if there's 12 teams good enough. So you're going to play more games just to play more games. And I think the more you expand it, the less important the season becomes and the more you become the NFL, as far as all right, you're in the playoffs? Well, you know, why play Trevor [Lawrence] in this game if you're already in? All of a sudden you're not in the top 12 and kids just aren't playing."

Team A plays Team B in a bowl game that's considered meaningless.
Team A plays Team B in a playoff game that will be considered, and aptly called, meaningless.

If the ingredients are the same the product is the same. There is nothing in life that is an outlier to that statement.
certainly view this differently....
I figure your assumption is,.....nobody but #1 n #2 are going to come out as NC anyway...thats flawed....proven so

winner moves on to fight another day....
Loser goes home....
Like @mando points out....

If it was true....
Just have committee pick top 2.....
Since rest are meaningless ...?

now.....some years it might be so...
Some years...not so much

@mando Yes. Same teams is the same game. Giving it another label? It'll fall out, ratings, just like NY6. Players will be opt out.

(If they're smart these bowl committees will to pay NIL money for participation.)

Coastal Carolina versus Ohio State. "Oh it's playoffs!" I'll watch because it's football. The ratings? @50+yeartidefan if that was a bowl game you wouldn't watch it.

I hate to say it but I'll be right.

I agree entirely. Most years there would be 5 or 6 playoff worthy teams. Five versus twelve would probably be a serious mismatch. This will kill the bowls.

Lets put it this in a neat little package
If it was a bowl game and it was on a night there wasn't anything going. Turn it off at halftime. Never remember even watching
I might watch
If it was a playoff game. I would prioritize it as a watch. And plan the evening as a cfp game to watch

This is adding a lot of games. 1 plays 4, then 2 plays 3. 5 plays 8, 6 plays 7. Etc., the extra games is going to be hard unless they have less non conference games.
Something they might explore....
But then.........
SEC expanding and going to have to add conference games...i suspect...
And all these P5 games scheduled..

but ... still may have to-drop a regular scheduled game...
No way they will drop conference cc game...SECs cash cow..

but 16/17 games is a lot

I imagine this gets us that better schedule you and I whine about. Plus that extra Playoff game may give us another good home game, MAY.

I've never suggested such. I have said the current grouping of 12 provided bad matchups.

However. If this latest news proves true with OU and TX I see why Sankey is looking at 12. The number of SEC teams in the playoffs could triple. Solvency.

It does not change the ball game itself: which is the main point, today.

I've always wanted for Bama to be separated from Jacksonville State. This expansion in the works goes along the lines of what I've wanted to see a long time.

It's still the same ball game; just under a different name.

You're not expecting some of these game to be competitive. No one is who looks at this through a 20/20 viewpoint. But, the title of the game, playoff, gives reason.

"It's about participating in the playoffs" versus "it's about going to a bowl game." I'm hung up here, participating. The game is the same, the title changes.

This falls in line with "giving everyone a trophy." I see it that purely. I guess, thankfully, I should mention those in charge of this process have said the same, "giving the opportunity to participate."

We know the 2 factors are....
Broadening the viewer base....
Money...

competition will be mentioned...

and the day will come... when #10/11/or12 makes it mysteriously to
the NC game......

yes,Terry, it will happen...
Say...this was started in 2019....a #12 Bama got in....
...that team was certainly capable of a big run....dont you think?

They would not have been in that season under how the 12 team playoff has been presented. Alabama would have killed Memphis that season, sure. The playoff committee had the Tigers as the 17th best team in the nation: a team that would have received an automatic bid. UGA would have played the Tigers that season and the result would have been the same.

Penn State met Memphis in their bowl game that season and won by two touchdowns. Ironically, one of Penn State's losses that season was to Minnesota (a team ranked below Memphis.) Hmmm, another example of how this format for a playoff would water down the regular season, is it not?

Yes,....I actually do agree...it is watered down...
Like ncaa bball tournament is watered down with 60 something...

......but.....

a committee not picking #1 bama for most of season with 2 losses....
A freaky one...and.... a close one to #1 lsu......
They would have been in...and might have one the whole thing...

agree watered down...not agreed it going to be more fun
And i hope they change it from 12 to 8....( even though bama wouldnt have made it in 2019 But less watereddown)

This is the worst analogy anyone has thrown out there. You're talking about a group that has 32 conferences with 350 teams.

But, there is truth in what you're saying here. The basketball tournament is watered down. The #16 seeded teams are 1-140. The #15 seeds are 9-135.

There's a reason that first Thursday has four games on at the same time: it gives you the abililty to jump from one bad ball game to another.

No. They would not have been in in 2019. They'd just lost to Auburn which would have been one of the at-large bids: a higher ranked Auburn coming off of a victory over Alabama. That's based off of the rankings from the playoff committee.

In 2013 we'd have seen Bama get an at-large bid. They'd face Fresno State. And that's the type of match-up you'd complain about any other week of the year because...it's a bad ball game.

To clear up one thing if it's misinterpreted. I don't mind watching Bama beat a team by 40 any day of the week, a team by any name for that matter.

sure it's a good analogy...
When you’re taking the 6/7/8/9th teams from a conference...
With what chance-to win a NC
Realistically...zero

so if you just took the 32 conference champs?

you just dont WANNA get it...
But i think you probably do...

Cant even agree when we disagree...
Which i totally do...

The thing is I'll likely get just what I want: a better post season without seeing these matchups.

If things continue to progess as they are there won't be a playoff as we normally see one. Two sixteen team divisions headed to one championship game.
