Watercooler conversation this past week found its way to the broken National Championship trophy. I work in a place where there are only a few Bama fans, so the fun was had at my expense.

After the good natured ribbing ran its course we pondered what would happen to the pieces. Auctioning them off was one of the first courses of action to find universal favor. To a person we suspected the the pieces could fetch more that the $30K it was reported to take to replace it. How much a piece would go for was the harder question to gain concensus upon.

Trying to bring perspective to just how valuable a piece was, I called over a female coworker who is enough of a Bama fan to make all of us proud. I asked her, If I placed a piece of the broken National Championship Trophy on this table and next to it I placed a diamond exactly half its size, which would you choose if you could only have one?

Nearly "jumping the snap count" to answer the question in front of a mostly non-Alabama group, she blurted out "The crystal. No Doubt."

She went on to clarify that anyone can buy a diamond at anytime and anyone can sell a diamond at anytime, but to have a piece of that trophy is a once in a lifetime chance at best, and it would become that item that my children fight to receive in her will. "Diamonds are not forever, but a national championship trophy is."

Aren't southern women the best?
