🏈 Croom headed back to NFL

Why is he coaching running backs and not offensive line?

That is the position he coached most in the NFL.

having been a RB & LB's coach for ~20 years and a DC for 3-4 years, is he just content doing the same thing? seems odd to me as most guys are looking for a HC position and they are moving around position wise to meet that goal.

I'd say yes.

Deep down, he probably realized the reason he got his shot at an HC position wasn't due to his goals, but due to his name being linked to our HC position.

I have serious, serious doubts MSU would have had him on their list, AT ALL, if he hadn't interviewed for our job.

I'm glad he's back in the NFL. But, that's because he's not in the SEC anymore.

Terry, got this from a friend of mine who went to MSU. Can't vouch for the veracity of his comments, but I have no reason to doubt him.

He said that MSU wanted an NCAA baseball tourney in Starkville. NCAA said "Change your state flag." The voters chose not to do that, so the school hired Sly in hopes that it would appease the NCAA and get them the tourney. It did not. Again, I'm just repeating what my friend told me.

I wish Coach Croom well.

The only state that I know of that has run into a problem holding baseball tourney's was South Carolina. A lot of that stemming from an NAACP boycott started as a protest against the Confederate flag on display on the state house grounds.

I haven't heard anything associated with Croom and baseball in that state.

What I have heard was the staff turnover was what ultimately caused his demise. The Ath. Dir. that was there when he was hired isn't any longer. And, they have already had one President in place that was different than the one that was in charge when he was hired...currently on their second.

So, his "support structure" at State is no longer there.

The idea that hiring a football coach could somehow sway a decision for baseball? That doesn't make sense to me.

Good to see Mr. Croom land a job. I always liked what he did at Mississippi State, but he inherited the program under sanctions. That's never easy.

They lost a total of 8 scholarships over 4 years. The lowest total was 81 on the team in '05-'06. ('83 in '06-'07)

That is far from being a damaging sanction. Heck, you'll find teams, without sanctions, that do well with less on scholarship. Heck, in his second class he signed over 30 kids...

I don't even know if you call the loss of scholly's a bump in the road.

They did lose 11 paid visits, but didn't lose any coaches on the road.

I wasn't aware the number was THAT low. From what I'd heard from some MSU fans, it appeared to sound detrimental to the program. Thank you for the numbers, and thanks to MSU fans for pulling my chain. :P

What was detrimental to their program was 'it is Mississippi State' and they are located in 'Starkville.' Scholarship restrictions were way down the list.

A cynic would say that the sanctions would have been much more draconian had they not hired a Black head coach - knowing the image conscious and overtly PC NCAA suits would not want to overly hamstring a minority coach. Now, am I such a cynic?

It is called Starkville for a reason, LOL.
