There's just one word that makes the difference for me. OL Penalties.

They have gotten worse since Cristobal arrived. He's a fantastic recruiter but I think an average coach.

Last year Cristobal had several offers. Knowing this was coming was one of the reasons Saban hired Key.

I get that, but why split OL duties? Why not just make Key an analyst/off-field assistant like Sark, Kiff, Tosh, etc?

Splitting the tackles from the interior linemen in drills just adds to the idea of a lack of cohesion.

It's a question only Saban can answer, right?

I can only guess an on the field position was what was required to get Key in Tuscaloosa. If you recall, Key interviewed for the position Mario ultimately received back in the spring of '13. I know Saban was very impressed with Key and as soon as he became available Saban jumped.
