When looking into common threads of surprising out of conference upsets, two things typically stand out. The big underdog has an experienced QB and they have a lot of returning starters. For the purposes of this posting, Iāll just focus on the latter because the numbers are truly unprecedented. More often than not, there are only 25 or so teams that have 16 or more offensive and defensive starters returning. Because of the added year of eligibility due to COVID, the number of really experienced teams this season is stunning. Of the 130 FBS programs, 93 teams have 16 or more returning starters ⦠79 of them have 17 or more returning starters! Of course, with so many experienced teams maybe it will cancel out any increase in upsets. For thereās a good chance the Power Five team might have just as many returning starters as the non-Power Five team theyāre playing. Regardless, with all of that experience. we should see a lot of really good football this season.
