If a player isn't on the award list, he can't win it.

So, using the term useless is wrong.

Same with pre-season polls. They do mean something in the overall picture...it's only fans of teams that don't find themselves in the top 25 or so that always say, "these are useless."

Hell, here a situation where both are useful. It just game Mike something to write about.
 
They serve a definite purpose: stimulate sales of pre-season magazines, stimulate hits on blogs, create viewership fpr pre-season shows. This pre-season stuff is an industry unto itself.
