A reporter pointed out that we played Georgia State last year and are playing Georgia Southern this year. He asked CNS if any consideration was given to keeping such conference games "in the state" by playing schools such as South Alabama, Troy and UAB.

CNS responded that these games were scheduled before he arrived at Bama, but he had no objection to playing in state schools.

How would you guys feel about adding one of the named schools, or say Samford or Jacksonville (even UNA) to our schedule?

It serves no benefit, at all.

I've seen the "keeps the money in state" opinions which are balanced out, in my opinion, by the "it brings new money in from out of state."

Consider Auburn in 2004 with the Citadel. South Carolina has the Citadel on their schedule this year. IF they were to make a run (a lot of their fans think they can) how badly will that hurt them in the computers?

Add to that, considering a school like UAB is losing millions every year in football alone, I think a lot of these smaller schools ought to be shut down if they can't at least break even...but, that's a story for another thread.

IMO. I think it would be a good idea to play one of the state schools once a year on a rotating basis. Jacksonville St., Troy State, UABirmingham, USAlabama and so forth. UNA is still D II until the 2013 season so I see no reason to play them right away. Ohio St. has played other in state schools for years. I'd like to see it happen.

i think Troy and UAB in that order are the only 2 instate schools worthy of playing the Tide. i don't think it would hurt us that much to play either one of those when you look at who we've been scheduling the last few years for our "tune-up" games.

South Alabama may not be a bad choice, due to the fact that there are several players on their roster that can/have played for the Tide. South will be a contender in the next 10 years. They will have the same level of talent as a South Florida, but South Alabama will hopefully sustain the success a little better than South Florida did.

Yeah, I think everyone knows there is always a lot of talk about these kind of games against in state schools and I think there is nothing better we could do than to give more exposure to teams in state-- USA, UAB, Troy (though watch out!! remember Mizzou a few years back!!), or even ASU or Tuskegee would be fantastic for those programs... though likely at least a little bit embarrassing...

I would rather see UA play a contender rather than some "scrub" school. Instead of "tune-up" games I think schools should play the best teams in the country because at the end of the day if UA is undefeated and two other teams are also the one with the weaker schedule gets left out, so to me just to make sure you make it if you run the table play top schools.
