Two members of Clemson's runner-up team are playing in this week's Senior Bowl.

On defense, Clemson tackle D.J. Reader felt good about the effort his group made that night. Also in Mobile for the Senior Bowl, Reader saw the same themes as Peake. They were in good position, but recognized a few big plays cost Clemson a title.

"They don't make mistakes," Reader said. "They capitalize. If you're going to beat them, you really have to beat them. You can't go out there and have a fluke game and just win against them. You have to beat them straight up. That's what I respect about them as a team. They're going to do the things that matter. They're going the little tackles, even if it doesn't count, they're going to make them. They just do things the right way."

Clemson's few misfires were major factors.

There were the 50-plus-yard touchdown passes to O.J. Howard, Kenyan Drake's 95-yard kickoff return and the onside kick recovery by Marlon Humphrey early in the fourth quarter. That surprise trick play followed a game-tying field goal with 10:34 to play.

"It definitely played a big part," Peake said. "We had a chance to take a lead. It was a good play call. I'll give them that. We weren't expecting it at all. They executed it, got the ball back and scored off of it."

Reader took pride in the way Clemson defended Alabama's top offensive threat. Derrick Henry finished with 36 carries and 167 rushing yards ― 50 of which came on a first-quarter touchdown.

"We gave up some big runs because of misfits, but when we had it fitted right, it wasn't like he was just running through our defense," said Reader, owner of four tackles in the game. "He's a great back, don't get me wrong, but just a couple of misfits."

Watson is what kept Clemson in that game. Bama won as a team. Take Watson away with his play making and passing...Clemson would have been processed. That being said, next year should be interesting if you are following Clemson.

Roll, National Champions (do you get that, Clemson?) Roll!

The headline and the text do not agree. Gotta love when a writer takes it upon himself to put words in the mouth of an interviewee. Sure the WR said something along those lines but the other guy was mostly complimentary. The writer made it sound like the whole team was saying that nonsense. Nobody dominated anybody in that game. The good guys just scored 5 more points.

Agreed. The snippet that's quoted above is nothing but complimentary and accurate as far as I'm concerned.

Exactly. They need the attention grabber to get the click, but there is usually a semblance of the same tone from content to headline.

I thought the Clemson players were mostly spot on and seemed rather respectful/humble. But if you don't read the article, you'd leave think their comments were excuse filled sour grapes

Here's my take on "the better team didn't win". Championship teams don't give up 95 yard touchdown returns on special teams in the biggest moments of the game. Championship teams don't give up back breaking big plays to a TE in the same game (two for TD's). Championship teams don't give up gashing 50 yard runs by the rb for touchdowns in big games. As the fire got hotter Clemson started melting and the Tide kept making plays. Championship teams keep making plays, they don't melt under the hottest fire. Clemson melted... So let's put the "better team didn't win" argument to rest please. The best team won.

Obviously they didn't "dominate"... But I don't think the quotes are that far off... They played really well. Their drives were more sustained and consistent for the most part. Bama's big plays and a once in a career onside kick made the difference. Unfortunately for them, this is all they have to hang their hat on now

They played well. Playing well works in regular season games. It gets you beat in championship games. Again, championship teams don't give up that many big plays in a championship game and still have the right to call themselves the "better team". The better team won.

Different a better word here, ya think?
No, not really. Watson was the better QB, not a knock on Coker, he played well and surpassed all my expectations this season. Watson had to carry that entire offense, Coker did not have to do that in the game. He had a running game, maybe not as great as normal but good enough and he had special teams to help him out. There were three players that I think were a notch above ours, QB, RG and RT. Every other position I give the nod to Bama.
