Chris Samuels joins Washington Redskinsā Ring of Fame
The former Shaw High School and Alabama standout was inducted by the NFL team at Sunday's game.
Chris Samuels joined the Washington Redskinsā Ring of Fame during halftime of the NFL teamās game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
āIt was truly a blessing to play for the Redskins,ā Samuels said. āIt was a childhood dream to play in the NFL, and itās just been an honor.ā
Samuels spent that childhood in Mobile. He played football at the Port Cityās Shaw High School before going to Alabama.
Samuels was a four-year starter with the Crimson Tide. As a senior in 1999, he won the Outland Trophy as the nation's best interior lineman, received unanimous All-American recognition and earned the Jacobs Trophy as the SEC's best blocker.
Washington traded two first-round picks plus fourth- and a fifth-round selections in the 2000 NFL Draft to the San Francisco 49ers to move into the third spot, where the Redskins chose Samuels.
Samuels started at left offensive tackle in all 141 games he played over the next 10 seasons for Washington. Samuels received Pro Bowl invitations during the 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 seasons.
Samuels' career ended suddenly and prematurely in the 2009 season after an injury attributed to spinal stenosis.
Samuels' addition brought Washington's Ring of Fame membership to 51, and Samuels was inducted during the team's annual Alumni Homecoming Weekend.
Samuels is among the 122 modern-era nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fameās Class of 2020.
