šŸˆ CECIL HURT: I’ll say it again, Alabama needs to bring in a big-name opponent

The summer draws to a close. The days are starting to slowly shorten, although there are still some hours of twilight. In the still air, the old barn sits quietly — perhaps too quietly.

The wisps of hay remaining in the loft are dried to a crisp, like unsalted pretzel sticks. The equestrian implements — an old saddle, some bridles stiff with age — are covered with cobwebs and dust. There is no need to look in the stalls. The horse passed away years ago. It is dead.

But guess what? I’m going to beat it one more time.

The Southeastern Conference and the University of Alabama released the full 2018 football schedule Tuesday. If you’re an Alabama fan that pays hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars, for your seats in Bryant-Denny Stadium, you had to wonder if there was something deeper at work here because you’re left looking at a slate that could have been put together by the Equifax security team in its spare time.

The four SEC home games — over which Alabama exerts no control — will be Texas A&M, Missouri, Mississippi State and Auburn. How good those teams will be is out of Alabama’s control. A couple of years ago, an Alabama-Missouri game would have been an SEC Championship game rematch. That won’t be the case this year. Mississippi State has grown more competitive along roughly the same time arc that has seen Texas A&M grow less so. The Alabama-Auburn game is part of the cultural fabric of the entire state. So even with no LSU, no Tennessee, no Florida, no Georgia, an SEC schedule has some promise.

The non-conference schedule? Arkansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette, and The Citadel. As football programs, they will probably field teams that will be better than you think. As box-office attractions, they aren’t quite B-listers. The other game is a neutral site opener that’s a murderous drive away in Orlando, a matchup with Louisville whose primary allure will depend on whether Cardinal quarterback and reigning Heisman winner Lamar Jackson returns for his senior season.

To be clear: I know every argument for this schedule structure. The economic benefits for Alabama have been considerable. The head coach, who knows far more about recruiting than I do, thinks it helps in that area. If you are the better team, and Alabama usually is these days, eliminating the variables of a road game increases the chances of success.

But once again, this is The Tuscaloosa News and I am going to speak for a number of Tuscaloosa constituencies here: the merchants and restaurateurs, the loyal fans, the college students.

Wouldn’t it be possible, not every year, but once a decade or so, to reward everyone who faithfully attends in years like 2018 with a big-time, big-name opponent in the most big-time, big-name college football stadium in the SEC? The logistics can’t be impossible. Some of the teams who have managed to pull it off this year: Ohio State, Oklahoma, Clemson, Auburn, Georgia, Notre Dame, Texas, and USC. They’ve played exciting games, for the most part, accompanied by great pageantry. Isn’t it time for Alabama, the decade’s Alpha Dog, to do the same? Imagine bringing in one of the elite intersectional opponents listed above. Imagine Michigan running out of the tunnel (or Alabama in the Big House)?

Nick Saban has made history at Alabama. No one questions that. But those games can make history, too. Quite frankly, the Alabama fans deserve them — at least once in a decade — and this horse deserves to finally rest in peace.

By the time a game like this is signed and occurs, Saban won't be around (don't shoot the messenger, he WILL retire at some point and setting up games like this takes several years).

I've always liked Cecil's articles and I can see his point about doing this "for the fans". But ultimately there's no upside in scheduling marquee games in the playoff age when the SEC champion is all but guaranteed a spot in the playoffs so long as they have no more than one loss. The risks, financial among them, of possibly dropping a game to an SEC opponent AND to a major OOC opponent would almost certainly knock a team out of playoff contention. Winning the big name OOC game gains you nothing for an SEC champion who has one or no losses at playoff selection time.

Amen! With the way the conferences are set up right now, I believe a power 5 conference school ought to schedule and play only other power 5 schools. I know some are going to say money if you do a home and home but we are paying over a million dollars for these schools to come in and play a game. Loved the old series we use to do with other colleges.

Also remember that Alabama has had a significant OOC game for the last several years (Florida State, USC, Michigan, VA Tech, Clemson). Is it really important to add another in a single season? Yes, it would be nice to bring ND, USC, Nebraska, Oklahoma, UCLA, Miami or someone else to BDS, but if they do, expect to lose a home game in a future year.

The fans want championships. That's all! Wins. Home and home vs big name opponents won't do that. Bama will play those "big name" games in the playoffs if they run there schedule. The folks who can afford season tickets will also be able to afford whatever playoff game they want to go to. Whereas the vast majority of fans who can not afford those will still get to watch the games on TV which includes the reg season and the playoffs. Bama plays one "big name" a year, usually in a neutral site and so far has won them all under Nick Saban. Don't mess with the equation. If the rest of the SEC is in decline....GREAT! Makes our road to the ship easier.

While the Neutral site games have been fun to attend. I agree with Cecil on this 100000%. Maybe do away with a neutral site game for a year or two for a home and home series.

Heck it doesn't even have to be back to back years. I know in times past teams have done home and home with a year off in between. (We could throw in a neutral site game).

Yes Saban will retire soon, and there will be a fall off, but hopefully not much of one. Either way, I would love to see a game at the "Horseshoe", or Big house. I hate ND, but respect their past. I know that the stadium is an absolute dump, but I would still love to attend a game there.

How do you, @rammerjammer , know ND's stadium is a dump? I have been there and while it is old it was nice. Not BDS nice but more like Kentucky stadium nice. I've also been to Doak-Campbell stadium and looking back, I would have to say ND's was better.

Saban lost to Florida State in Jacksonville in 2007

Going off word of numerous folks, such as yourself who have been. You are the first person I have ever heard say that it was nice.....ever. Same goes for Pasadena and the Rose Bowl. Would love to attend, but hear it is antiquated and in serious need of a face lift. I literally have talked to dozens of people who have attended games there and never have I heard one single person brag about how nice ND's stadium is. The word decent may have been uttered a few times, but it is not likened to some of the shrines we see around the southeast.

I dont know how Bama fans really afford football...
Neutral site to open season...
SEC championship game
2 playoff games....
....i am season ticket holder....thats a lot of travel n expenses...
What impresses me is...how BD is so full at kickoff vs the light weights on schedule...
Considering the opponent....the heat (September games)...and the cost...
Of course its a apethic crowd...and heavily gone by 4th quarter...but still show up..
While I donot like neutral site games...if Nick likes them....then I am for them....
And I have a 75 inch 4K TV....with close bathroom....and cold beer closer..

The Rose Bowl got the facelift is needed, but like you, I’ve always heard that ND was a dump compared to what it ā€œshouldā€ be. You can look at photos of it from it as recently as the UGA game, and it just looks like a stadium still stuck in 1985.

I'm kind of with Cecil. The neutral site games have been great but lets get a Oklahoma or Ohio State or Texas or something like that to come to Bryant-Denny.

Oh my lord, would you guys get off of that bullshit already? Good lord.

How is it bullshit? If the state government won't allow them to travel East, then it is legitimate. The only reason Fresno got to come to BDS was the fact that the contract had been signed years in advance.

I see Cecil's point of view, but really how many of the casual fans that aren't season ticket holders are going to be getting a ticket for one of these said home games? I am a season ticket holder and I still have to make choices as to what games I attend; the home schedule, possibly the neutral site game, possibly a road game, SEC championship, playoff or bowl game. I see Saban's point of view as well. I can play in the recruiting hotbeds of GA, TX, and next season FL and be seen by all of these kids and invite a list of them to come watch in person, even though I can't speak to them at that venue.

It's bullshit because it gets brought up literally weekly on here. We get it. Not to mention there is going to be an exemption (or supposed to be) for sports travel once its passed.

And he's saying a big home game, not another Fresno or CSU, that would bring the casuals out.

Sorry I don't stroll through the political BS! Didn't know there was supposed to be a sports exemption and I thought it had already passed as well. I know that Cecil was referring to Power 5 schools and not the lesser teams like Fresno and CSU.

The "law" about banning travel to states with "bigoted" laws did "pass." The exemption is what they're waiting on to go through.
