🏈 Can anyone recommend a good cigar?

Any of you cigar smokers? My son and I are starting this year to celebrate with the Tide when we beat the Viles. We're both non-smokers so help me out with some suggestions.

I went through a phase during the cigar craze of the 90's trying to think I knew a good cigar and would smoke one occasionally. They are now relegated to sitting around a fire pit or camp fire, and I smoke a cheap swisher sweet or a slightly less cheap moontrance bourbon vanilla cigars. For this cheap non-smoker, a flavored cigar is the best way for me.

If you really want a fairly mild inexpensive "regular" cigar, I recommend a macanudo.

I hope we're all smoking them Saturday!

Here are a few that I like. I'm partial to mild-mod on the bold-o-meter. Not really a fan of super spicy cigars..
1. Anything Ashton makes
2. Torano (Single Region is good and relatively cheap, they also do a green wrapper/wood wrap that is an anniversary cigar i think. IT's awesome.)
3. CAO Criollo
4. Rocky Patel 1992 Anniversario
5. Partagas (keep it mild... their spicy ones will have you nauseous...)

@riz hits the nail on the head: it's all about the "ingredients:" what's wrapped in the tobacco leaf.

My suggestion is go to a tobacco shop. Then, talk to the owner...there's always some local brand they carry that doesn't carry the name recognition (like Macanudo) but are really good smokes.

Secondly—stop by the liquor store and get a good brandy (I'm partial to a Scotch with mine.)

my new fav... which was a surprise to me is Leccia. the one i had was a black label. unsure of the name. I like to branch out and try new brands.. the real trick is learning what boldness you like. Dark wrappers are usually bold and light colored (Connecticut) wrappers are usually more mild. Either way they will be tasty after rocky flops...

Find a good Torpedo like Oliva at your local cigar shop. Mild but with a great body of flavor. Make sure to have a good libation like bourbon or brandy to sip on.

@riz, I like vanilla anything. I guess that's my favorite flavor. Love Peach Brandy as well. I can tell I'm way behind in cigar intelligence. In my old Boy Scout days we'd just sneak in a couple of our dad's Swisher Sweets and thought we were really cool doing so. I think I should move up to something more suitable for a celebration than Swisher Sweets on this occasion.

@TerryP, my son lives in Huntsville, where we'll be watching the game, and he knows of a cigar store (I think) over there. I'll / we'll make a visit with some of these suggestions in this thread.

@Bamabww Gotcha. Just trying to get an idea. One that I was going to recommend to you, @RollllTide! mentioned already. Oliva Serie G, it's moderately priced, medium strength and body, with good flavor. Creamy and earthy. I'd definitely go with the maduro wrapper, though. Gives it a nice sweetness. Most anybody that doesn't smoke often or a lot enjoys those.

You might also try a Perdomo Champagne or Lot 23, both of those are mild and creamy, with the Lot 23 being a little nutty.

My favorite non cuban line is Illusione. Try an Epernay Le Elegance.

That should be enough. Don't want to overwhelm you. Smoke what you like, like what you smoke.

I have never been a smoker, but I did start that habit in Legion Field in 1989 to the tune of 47-30. I normally go Swisher Sweet or a Black and Mild.

We went to The Patriot Cigar Store just over Monte Sano mountain in Huntsville, told the owner we were non smokers and asked for his advice. (The owner is an Iraq war veteran who said his dream had been to open a cigar store when he got home and he did.) I enjoyed the cigar he picked out for us and the celebration of a victory over the Viles. Life is good. Roll Tide.

In the 1950s, Jim Goostree, the head trainer for Alabama, began another tradition as he bought a box of cigars on the way to Neyland Stadium and began handing them out following a victory over the Volunteers. Both teams continued the tradition for some time, though kept it secret due to NCAA rules concerning extra benefits and tobacco products. Alabama publicly restarted the tradition in 2005, though as a result, self-reported an NCAA violation. Every year since 2005, the winning team knowingly violates the NCAA rule and reports the violation in honor of tradition.
