Calvin Ridley knew early that Tua Tagovailoa would be special as a college quarterback.
On Friday, the former Alabama wide receiver fielded a number of questions at the NFL combine in Indianapolis. During his availability, Ridley touched on Tagovailoa, who gained national attention as a freshman for leading the Crimson Tide to a second-half comeback against Georgia in the National Championship Game in January.
āI knew the day Tua got there that he was going to be something special,ā Ridley told reporters. āAnd with the tools he would practice with, heād do really well. I knew that if he got a chance to get into a game that he would be very successful. And he proved it.ā
Certainly, Tagovailoa proved he could be successful on a large stage while leading Alabama to a memorable overtime victory at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against the SEC champion Bulldogs. The question of how Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban will use Tagovailoa and quarterback Jalen Hurts next season will be one of the SECās top storylines to follow this year. On Friday, ESPNās Chris Low published a piece in which Saban said roles could be found for both players next fall.
Chances are, weāve only seen a glimpse of what Tagovailoa can accomplish in Tuscaloosa. Likely, Ridley wasnāt the only Crimson Tide player who saw the young quarterbackās potential up close.
