Love it. I've always said that after QB, elite OT prospects are hardest to sign.

Good thing about getting kids that play HS OT is they are generally big and athletic enough to move inside if necessary. Don't know if he will be one of them, but he certainly has the size to be a big time OT... Which is awesome.

The commitment

Tommy Brown, four-star offensive tackle from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California, announced his commitment via Twitter, on Friday prior to the start of the Champions Cook-Out. Brown is in Tuscaloosa for the event, and expected to remain through the weekend.

Brown's commitment to Alabama comes as no surprise. He has been dreaming of an offer from the Crimson Tide for a long time. His father, Vince Brown, was on the track and field team (shot put) for Alabama in the early 80s. Brown has been an Alabama fan his entire life.

He visited Alabama in the spring, but did not receive an offer during his visit. Alabama evaluated Brown during the spring evaluation period (after his visit), and loved his progression as a lineman. Brent Key was very impressed, and designated Brown as a top priority in the 2018 class.

Most expected Brown to commit during his return visit to Alabama. He was on the commitment watch list this weekend, and decided to go ahead and jump on board.

The player

"Brown is a massive offensive tackle who swallows up defensives ends. He's powerful, strong and tough. If there's one area where Brown needs to improve it's foot speed to deal with outside rushers, but other than that he has the potential to be a special lineman for the Crimson Tide."- Adam Gorney, National Recruiting Analyst for Rivals.com.

"Huge kid, massive frame, not afraid to mix it up and has long arms and good arm extension. Has potential to be an elite tackle and pass protector but needs refinement in that area. Good run blocker needs to play with more natural leverage but a terrific get from the west coast for 'Bama and a kid that should be a starter at right or left tackle in a few years. Can play guard as well because he's good in tight spaces and aggressive down blocker."- Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell

The numbers

Alabama does not expect a big number of offensive linemen in this year's class. Three is number we have focused on from the start. Brown gives Alabama one offensive line commitment, and seven overall. Alabama will continue to pursue other top offensive linemen including Nick Petit-Frere, four-star tackle from Berkeley Prep in Tampa, Florida, Penei Sewell, Rivals100 offensive tackle from Desert Hills High School in Utah, and William Barnes, Rivals100 tackle from Apopka High School in Florida.

Alabama extended an offer earlier this week to Jarrett Bell, offensive tackle from Norco High School in California.

Jerome Carvin,
four-star offensive guard from Cordova High School in Tennessee, is attending the Champions Cook-Out today. He is also set to compete in the OL/DL camp on Saturday.

Emil Ekiyor
, four-star offensive tackle from Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, is also set to visit this weekend.

These are the key names to continue to watch on the offensive line for the Crimson Tide in the 2018 class.

I was more thrilled with him being from California and playing for a powerhouse on top of that. He is a massive dude too.
His name came up briefly back in June. One of the things I'd heard is he'd started since he was a frosh. According to what I've seen now, it looks like he started playing football when he was in ninth. Not sure which is the case.

Wow. That tape is impressive. I don't see the nastiness that we've seen from guys like Cam and Cotton, but his physical ability is through the roof. He carries that weight really well and doesn't have fat legs... Good looking athlete. Plus, despite being out on the west coast, it seems like he's a lock to sign with the legacy aspect. RTR

Isn't ninth grade and frosh (freshman) the same thing?
You missed the point here, OP. One report when he was camping had him starting as a frosh, the other says he started playing as a frosh.

When his name came up a few weeks ago I made mention of how unheard of it is to hear about a kid, as a frosh, start at Mater Dei. If he only started playing football when he hit the ninth grade ...

Yes. Big time athletics school... Top 2-3 on the West Coast. Think Bishop Gorman in Vegas... Playing as a freshman is no joke.

Big difference here in the way Mario is handling this and the way a certain coach to the east of Tuscaloosa has been handling recruiting lately. H/T to Mario.

Brown chose Alabama over a slew of other schools. Ultimately, it came down to Alabama and Oregon. Former Tide OL coach Mario Cristobal, who is in his first year at Oregon, recruited Brown for the Ducks.

"It was really hard telling him that I was committing to Alabama," Brown says. "He asked me if we could keep an open line of communication just in case. I told him we could do that, but that I am one-hundred percent Alabama."

I love this kid! The one thing that I would have him work on is his hand placement. It looked like his left hand got outside a good bit and it ended up on the defenders arm/bicep. No biggie.
The one thing I really like about the way the staff has recruited quarterbacks is "it's all about camps."

When I heard about the different approach this year--following the same MO, "it's all about camps"--my head turned.

We critic the OL, a lot, around here...but, they sure do pull in some good looking kids.
