Football Contact Reduction: The Pac-12 will codify into a formal policy the existing practices across the Conference as they relate to limiting contact in football practice. The final policy will be released at Pac-12 Football Media Day on July 26. Going forward, the Pac-12 will look at guidelines around contact in practice to ensure that student-athlete well-being is being closely monitored, both in the amount of contact and in providing our student-athletes and coaches with ample opportunity to teach and learn the correct tackling methods during the spring and preseason.
“Pac-12 institutions house the leading medical trainers, doctors, and scientists working to enhance student-athlete health and well being,” said Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott. “Our athletic departments and coaches have been very progressive in this area and are deeply committed to advancing these efforts,” he added. “This initiative seizes on our opportunity to embrace, support, and coordinate all these efforts and build a framework to advance them with new resources, expertise and funding.”

If by "limit" they mean LESS contact, look for this league to have even less defense going forward. Next thing you know they will be as soft as the Big-12....

That was my impression as well.

On a bit of a separate note, but related, I wonder why this persons name is used in the following report from @coachingsearch. It's certainly related to the subject as he notes "an astounding number of injuries."

The PAC-12 appears set to adopt NFL-like practice standards across-the-board in an attempt to reduce injuries.

Today, the Pac-12 and its CEO Group consisting of university Presidents and Chancellors have agreed to a comprehensive "Student-Athlete Health and Well-Being Initiative" to start in the 2013-2014 academic year.

Per the release
, "The Pac-12 will codify into a formal policy the existing practices across the Conference as they relate to limiting contact in football practice. Thus, as the NFL limits contact in OTA's, the PAC-12 will soon release its acceptable guidelines.

During spring practice, USC head coach Lane Kiffin cranked up the physicality of practices, which seemingly led to an astounding number of injuries.

During NFL OTA's (off-season training activities) no live contact is permitted. No 1-on-1 drills including pass rush or WR vs. DB's. Bump-n-run is prohibited. No LIVE special teams work is allowed. No LIVE team drills are allowed.

In addition, the NFL mandates that teams wear helmets only; no shoulder pads are allowed.

It will be interesting to see the new guidelines.

As is, during spring practice, teams are allowed to hold 15 spring practices, including a spring game. These 15 practices must be completed within a period of 34 consecutive calendar days. Exceptions to consecutive days are university-sanctioned vacation and examination days, and days with inclement weather, restricting the possibility of practice. Only 12 spring practices may permit physical contact, none earlier than the third practice session. Tackling is allowed in 8 of the 12 contact sessions. Up to three of the eight tackling sessions may be devoted to 11-on-11 scrimmages. The spring game does count as one of the three scrimmages.

In August, all teams are allowed 29 practice opportunities.
