My father was a fireman and he was at Ladd Stadium the night stands collapsed. He help pull people out of the ruble. I barely remember that. I was too young to go with dad that night but it was not long before I was a fan listening to every game with dad on the radio.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

As part of Bryant's first team, Jackson was on the Crimson Tide team that opened the 1958 season at Ladd Memorial Stadium against LSU and Billy Cannon. LSU won the game 13-3, but what is probably remembered most about that game is the collapse of temporary stands erected in the end zone.

Have to disagree with that last sentence. What I remember most about the game is that Bama led the game 3-0, on the eventual 1958 NC, at the end of the third quarter. And that Billy Cannon did not run for 4 TD's, all over 50 yards, as he had done in 1957 when LSU won 28-0. And that Bama now had a football coach and the misery I had suffered for the previous 5 years was about to come to an end.

Sorry to hear about Bobby. Since he was only 5 years older than me, I'll have to say that he was too young to go now.

Its a bit on the whimsical side, but I remember something coach Bryant said about him on his TV show. He said that watching Jackson run the football was like watching a cow run down a path, but he got the job done. He was one of those tough guys on that first team. This was before two platoon football so he went both ways.

This in no way detracts from Bobby Jackson or his achievements in life, but the obituary is wrong in one regard. Chuck Bednarik was the player who tacklled Jim Taylor on the last play of the 1960 NFL championship game, not Bobby Jackson.
