šŸˆ Bob Stoops calls SEC dominance 'propaganda'; Nick Saban calls it animosity because of league's succe

Seems to me that he is trying to talk up the big schools in the BigXII by picking on the lesser teams in the SEC. Great move Bob, you are starting to sound alot like that other coach down in Austin...

That's true in so many ways. See OU and UT as the two schools in favor of leaving the conference at the number they are at now...no CCG game giving them the odds on favorite positions each year for higher post season accolades.

Stoops isn't the first coach to try to "Be like Mack." It's one of the main reasons Tubs lost control of the Auburn program and subsequently lost his job...

OU and UT have won 66% (10 of 15) of the conf championships 1996-2010. OU/UT have won the south 13 of the 15 times.

Yeah, the BigXII is talking about how weak the low end of the SEC is - its an easier argument for the BigXII.

BTW, just who was this thread intended to provoke?

You know the old expression, "Dance with the one who brung ya?" Consider it in this context...

When Stoops first took over the OU program he ran a type of offensive scheme we see a lot: power football, running to set up the pass, etc.

Yet, after he won the NC, we saw the offensive approach change in Norman. Gone was the power scheme and in comes the offensive scheme I'll call the Leach/Mumme school. (If you look at their OC's and other offensive coaches you see their bio's reflect both of those guys.)

Now, it's a brand of football I just don't care for and one that falls apart when its challenged by a solid defensive scheme. As example, see Bama vs Texas, see OU vs a number of opponents. Hell, look at the defense Notre Dame brought to Normal last year and what happened!

Now, despite knowing he's a better coach than the product he fields, he doesn't hold the same respect he used to hold in my eyes.

I could go on...but, choose not to today.

Oh, let me add this.

I think the reason you started this thread stemmed from a discussion you got into with a OU/Big12 fan there in Dallas. You didn't have the research/numbers to back up your assertion that what he was saying wasn't true and knew if you prodded me enough I'd do the research for you.

Not that I minded...some of it was enlightening.

Ouch, big assumption that I got into a discussion about that with an OU/BigXII fan and didn't have data... I really just picked it up on my twitter feed and thought it was interesting, so I decided to share.

I have plenty of non-researched smart ass retorts readily available for BigXII fans, I usually go with those first and if they want to have a real discussion, I'm happy to have it, but would rather spin them up first.

No. That was a thinly veiled insult thrown at you that you missed...From, a smart ass who happens to be well-researched.

I know you well enough Matt that I'm sure you have no lack of responses to any fan of any school.

SVP and Russillo weren't kind. College Football Live with Saunders, Andre Ware, and Mark May were laughing at him. The majority were saying "sometimes, as a coach, you just need to keep your mouth shut."

The comment that made me chuckle? Andre Ware saying, "a conference with 10 teams? Get to 12 teams, 14. Play a conference championship game. Then, talk about your conference."

"But I think that kind of goes with the territory," the Alabama coach says of the animosity.

FORT PAYNE, Alabama -- Before speaking at the Crimson Caravan's fifth stop of the spring, Alabama coach Nick Saban answered some reporters’ questions.

He was asked about comments that Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops made early this week about the Southeastern Conference's dominance being propaganda.

ā€œI didn’t even know he said it, so you’re going to have to tell me what he said,ā€ Saban said. ā€œI’ve got more important things to do than sit around and read what Bob Stoops has to say about anything. But I like Bob Stoops, and I respect him as a coach, but I’m really trying to manage our business.ā€

Saban was told that Stoops implied that the Big 12 Conference was stronger because its weakest teams are better than the teams at the bottom of the SEC. Teams from the SEC have won seven consecutive BCS championships.

ā€œWell, we don’t play everybody in the Big 12 or whatever it is, so I really don’t know much about their league,ā€ Saban said. ā€œWe have a lot of respect for what they do at Oklahoma, and I really don’t think that people that don’t play in our league really don’t understand the quality of our league from top to bottom.

ā€œI think there’s probably a lot of animosity out there because of the success that we have in our league, but I think that kind of goes with the territory. I understand that. But we certainly respect the great program that they have at Oklahoma and the other good programs that they have in the Big 12.ā€

great response... lolz

I wouldn't expect a writer from the Dallas media to side with OU/Stoops. That said, Kevin Sherrington had a great line about the SEC's dominance.

Not to get too personal, Bob, but you haven’t beaten an SEC team in 10 years, since before Nick Saban reinvented Alabama. You’ve lost to LSU and Florida in national title games, and you got rolled by Johnny Football in JerryWorld. He’s probably still running wild in your nightmares.

You can hate the SEC because it always dominates the football conversation, but you can’t knock the football. All you have to do to appreciate it is watch.

Loyalists of other leagues will concede that the SEC is great but argue that college football is cyclical. Yes, it is. The Romans and Greeks went through nice cycles, too, only they called them dynasties.

It's a good read...Dallas Morning News.

Looks like he had a remora stuck on his cheek.

That little (Inside) fishing comment is Funny as Hell.

I don't even want to say what went thru my mind.

But it envolved a 14 year old girl and a box of Crakerjacks.

These comments and other like them (Uh Ex Wisconsin Coach- etc etc.)

Go back to what my Dad used to say:

"Better to let other people think your a dumass

than open you mouth and remove ALL DOUBT"

The SEC has won seven straight national championships, but Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops says that does not make it the best conference in America.

Stoops, in the Big 12, pointed out at a recent publicity event that the ā€œbottom sixā€ teams in the SEC (it’s hard to tell exactly who he would include that group besides Kentucky and Tennessee) are far from dominant. In his conference, 8 of 10 teams went to a bowl game.

ā€œSo they’ve had the best team in college football,ā€ Stoops said, according to the Tulsa World.
ā€œThey haven’t had the whole conference. Because, again, half of ā€˜em haven’t done much at all. I’m just asking you. You tell me.ā€

He went on to say that the conference’s prominence is fed by mythology.

ā€œSo you’re listening to a lot of propaganda that gets fed out to you,ā€ he said. ā€œYou’re more than smart enough to figure it out. Again, you can look at the top two, three, four, five, six teams, and you can look at the bottom six, seven, eight, whatever they are. How well are they all doing?ā€

Florida coach Will Muschamp, formerly the defensive coordinator at Texas, heard Stoops’s comments and got a good laugh out of it tonight.

ā€œI’d be saying the same thing if I were in the Big 12,ā€ he joked. ā€œI said it for three years.ā€

That blurb touches on one of the things that ticks me off about this whole story.

Stoops wouldn't be head coach at OU if it wasn't for his time at Florida.

As DC of the Gators, he had games where they struggled with teams like Vandy. He coached games where teams like Kentucky put up 35 points on his defense. (In another year they gave up 28 to the Wildcats.)

The NC ring he carries from his Florida days? It came because Florida found a defense in 1996. A portion of football long forgotten in the Big12.

And again:

Damn you Matt!

This kinda stuff may be intersting in May.

But come September (I know theres a song there)

he'll be back to what he's good at.

1 of a handful of teams West of the Mississippi

that anybody even watches.

And CHOKING the Big Games 9 times outta 10.

Now about that song

If THIS don't make your feet move

you need and enema

Come September, five years from now, I'll still remember what he said...just wired that way.

ā€œWell, we don’t play everybody in the Big 12 or whatever it is, so I really don’t know much about their league,ā€ Saban said. ā€œWe have a lot of respect for what they do at Oklahoma, and I really don’t think that people that don’t play in our league really don’t understand the quality of our league from top to bottom.

I love the bold part.
