This weekend, Duke University will meet the University of Alabama on the football field and the match-up is a historic one. Eighty years ago, then-Alabama coach Wallace Wade made a shocking announcement to his championship team: he was leaving to coach at Duke. Because of Wade’s powerful legacy at both schools, the Blue Devils and the Crimson Tide are eternally linked. Lewis Bowling, author of ā€œWallace Wade: Championship Years at Alabama and Dukeā€ (Carolina Academic Press/2006), joins host Frank Stasio to talk about the legendary coach, the other times Duke and Alabama have gone head-to-head in football and this weekend’s game.

Funny how people celebrate Wallace Wade today because from every thing I've read he was considered a bit of a traitor here, along the lines of Fran.

Well i guess the one big glaring differance between WW & Fran is that WW has a statue out front and Fran Doesn't.
Wade is a part of our history. Same as any other prior coach. The diferance IMO is that we tend to focus on his ocmplishments
while he was her rather than to highlight his depature.

Wade wanted what CNS has, total control of his football team and the president of the University runs the school. I don't think he is thought so much as a traitor as some think. He honored the last year of his contract and he picked his successor.

He did quite well in picking his successor, who has also been honored with a statue.

So true 93 so true. Hmmm.. I wonder if time will be kind to CNS @ LSWHO or
Miles for that matter .......... nah we are more civil and appreciative than the toothless ones.

I didn't know that WW was reviled for leaving Alabama the way he did. I haven't read that whole book about the shared tradition, but it's fascinating, especially the part about WW going off to War, and about Coach Bryant introducing him to the team. Indeed, we do have some shared history. This is all very fun to talk about when we are well aware that we are about to POUND DUKE INTO A PUDDLE OF MELTED FLESH.

You forgot that Fran did have a statue. Most of then were either burned or smack to pieces.
