I've always been one to keep different quotations I've run across handy. It's as much for personal life lessons as it is for situations like this.

[MENTION=19574]riz[/MENTION] I've seen some criticisms but I think the reason its really stood out to me now is I've written two opinion pieces on the QB competition (or involving the QBs in one of them at least) and both teams there were various comments of certain ppl freaking the hell out at the thought that Sims could potentially become the starter. I just didnt understand the freak out and then I looked on facebook and twitter and was seeing some of the same claims. Hell even comments about Kiffin being hired as more proof Saban has no intention of giving Sims a look at QB because Kiffin runs a "pass happy" offense I guess not realizing he runs the pro-style just like we've been running (with a few tweaks).

When has an A-day game defined what a QB can, or will, do in the football season?

I could sit here and say, "he went 14 for 18 in game last season therefore he's one of the most accurate passers we've ever had in Tuscaloosa." The 14 for 18 is true—it was against Georgia Southern.

Which gives a more accurate view on how he'll do, A-day or a game like that? I'd say the actual game and it still doesn't give us the slightest clue.

We could sit here and say, "he's a great scrambler" but we really don't know that either. There's no way to judge his instincts based on the teams he's faced.

I'm not saying the QB with the best performance at A-Day will for sure be the starter, just saying it'd be much better to reserve judgement till after A-Day to see what each QB brings to the table and give us a better picture to actually give a analysis on one. Can't come up here and say Cooper has the strongest arm of the group, but makes bad decisions based on his HS Tape. Much better to see how they've progressed and how they've prepared to play in front of 70-90K people.

A-Day only defines what QB can do when I say so.

I just ran across something I had forgotten. I'm not saying it means anything other than it may be worth noting.

When we were recruiting Blake, Kiffin was at UT. He came within a hair of flipping Sims to the Vols and very well may have if he hadn't accepted the job at USC.

That leads me to believe Lane knows what Blake brings to the field.

Can a change at the offensive coordinator/QB coach bring a dramatic change in how a QB plays? I hate using this example, but it is timely.

How many of you guys recall how much improvement we saw in Jason Campbell when Al Borges was hired? He wasn't considered a threat, at all, before that season and ended up going in the first round.

I have utmost faith in the staff to do their job, be it w/ Blake or someone else. I know he will get a fair take on it too, I think the job is his if he just shows he can take care of the ball. Anyway, this will be one of the more interesting offseasons in a long time.

If the offense is designed for what Blake does best, it will work well enough to score a bunch of points and win... IF we have a running game that is formidable and a defense that can get stops when they need them.

I think most people lack faith in Sims because most teams did not recruit him as a quarterback out of high school. Most teams wanted him as a WR or Safety. That implies he lacks the skills to play QB for a major college program.

I, for one, would love to see what Coker could do if he's as good as advertised if he decides to come to Bama...and that's a BIG if. With that said, I'd be extremely excited to see what Sims could bring to the table. He's more than capable.

The one thing I've noticed among our fanbase is that they are quick to use and label something even remotely different as "gimmick." Sims is different and therefore gets thrown under the category "gimmicky." To a lot, anything "gimmicky" is taboo.

Yep. Lot of people were nervous we weren't going to get him to stick.

As i was watching "When Mama Calls" on APT, they showed a few old highlights of when Bear installed the wishbone offense. I have always wondered why we don't throw in a little of that with the RBs and HBs we've had the past few years. And now thinking about Sims being a duel threat type QB, could us running a wishbone now rival the HUNH offense? It would have to drive defenses insane to have a running QB in with Fowler or Henry in at FB/RB and Yeldon and Drake in at RB. I'm not exactly sure how well it would work but we put in a couple i formation plays before Fowler got hurt in '12, and i liked the hell out of it. If i had a team, i would do what i could to have as much of my talented players on the field at the same time as possible......i know i know, im not CNS. Lol

In terms of total yardage (which are the numbers I look at when weighing what's balanced and what isn't,) last season was the most unbalanced we've had in Saban's tenure.
