A few week back there was an article pointing to the fact that CNS was two over his limit for players on the roster. Shortly thereafter, two are done via medical scholarship. So all is even.

Now the Sims family is speaking of Blake joining the team in August, vice much later as was the previously the word out of CNS' office.

Any insite among the sorry lot of ya out there?

Being among that sorry lot, I'll take a crack at it. I haven't heard whether Deion Blue has made his grades or not, so one possibility is that Blake would get Blue's slot should Blue not make it.

Another possibility is this: we have some players ostensibly on scholarship whose dads are pretty well fixed. It is possible they might pay the freight for their son in order to free up a scholarship.

Thanks Joe.
Question: Beyond Daddy having the dough, another obsticle is the limitations on the number of Walk-On status individuals that a team can have. So if he unexpectedly shows up to claim a Walk-On slot, will he not simply be bumping a Walk-On team member vice a scholarship team member. And if so, who is that one guy who is not so glad to see Blake so early?

My understanding is that scholarshipped players plus "invited" walk ons can't be over 105. The 105 are the only ones who can participate in practice up until the time school starts. I don't think that list is out yet, so there isn't much way to tell who might be bumped, at least now.

Well we can figure on Coach Sal footing the bill for Vinnie... so we know that's a walk on spot right?

Vinni being the scholarship certainly seems to fit the bill (not that I'm tell Coach Sal how to spend his money).

But if this is the case, then the question does shift to whicy Walk-On is told that he can not play at all?

Not knowing....how does a scout team work? i'm assuming these are all volenteer ppl that arent walk on or scholly players. just bodies to line up against and hit? IF 105 is MAX & 30 something the recruiting limit anually......

I've really never botherd to understand how it all works out.
Someone enlighten me.

But i would imagine that Coach Sal, if Vinnie is a walk on, would get a discount of touition becuse of his employment with the university?
Don't all employees get some kind of discount on touition as part of thier package?

I mean ass a tax payer and a fan....i have no problem with free tuition for kids of faculty & staff attending @ now free. I Actually think that shouldbe the norm. if not free than @ a discount. & IMO that should apply from everyone from Dr. Witt down the the grounds keepers & Janitors.

I suspect that you have nuts and bolts of it. 25 scholarships per year / No more than 85 scholarships at any time / No more than 105 total (scholarship & walk-ons) on the team at a time. This leaves 20 walk-on positions available.

I too think Vinnie will take one of the 20. But I tend to not think of Walk-On slots as throw aways. Remember Auburn getting razzed becaused the burned a scholarship on a Long-Snapper? Snappers, Holders, Back-Up kickers and Punters; Walk-On status is usually where they land...which benefit the rest of the team by letting those scholarships go to a fourth Quarterback, or that "Sky's-the-limit" prospect who needs a few years to bear fruit.

My point is that in a year with us replacing our Kicker, our Punter, our Long Snapper, and our Returner, we will lose a slot on the roster -- not a scholarship, but the ability to even enter the locker room -- we will have Blake and Vinnie sitting on the bench in place of anyone who could address this question.

+ Blake Sims in the fall finally has a name. Harrison Jones

Blake Sims' impressive work in the classroom means that he will report a semester earlier than expected. This means that Memphis TE Harrison Jones, brother to OL Barrett Jones, must wait to enroll until spring.

Congratulationg Mr. Sims. Keep up the good work. Thank you Mr. Jones for your sacrifice. We look forward to seeing you in the Spring. Roll Tide all around.

>> Barrett Jones' brother "understands": Thursday's addition of freshman "athlete" Blake Sims to the 105-man roster meant the subtraction of Harrison Jones, a freshman tight end from Memphis who will be held out until January, Alabama coach Nick Saban said.
Jones' brother Barrett is the Crimson Tide's starting right guard.
"He was looking forward to an opportunity, but at the same time, stuff like this happens sometimes, and he understands," Barrett Jones said. "He wants to do what's best for the team, so I think he'll come back in the spring excited and ready to go."
