Alabama's opening game starter at quarterback is no longer with the team.

Redshirt freshman Blake Barnett is transferring and has left the program, sources told AL.com.

While the former five-star recruit opened the season as the Tide's starter, he was pulled following the second series of that opening game in favor of freshman Jalen Hurts.

Barnett had been Hurts' backup since that first game.

Barnett appeared in three of the first four games. He was 11 of 19 for 219 yards with two touchdown passes and no interceptions, including 4 of 7 for 55 yards with a touchdown during Alabama's 48-0 win over Kent State on Saturday.

The California native was the No. 2 pro-style quarterback and No. 21 overall prospect in last year's recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Barnett leaving likely means redshirt junior Cooper Bateman will now be the Tide's backup quarterback.

At this point in the academic year, he really can't go anywhere. All schools have a "last day to add/drop" a class date. It's way past that point. My bet is that he will stay out of school and enroll somewhere in January. He'll have a forced redshirt wherever he goes (FBS) and he wouldn't be eligible until the 2018 season anyway. Sorry to see him give up.

And how quick things can change at any position. Being the backup he was getting a ton of meaningful snaps and more was right there. What a front runner. I guess he can go and hang 10 with his main squeeze. Aloha?

Look for a school that is based on quarter vs semester...

Disappointed he isn't gonna stick around as the backup, still lots to learn from some really good coaches. But, he'll have to own the outcome of this decision. I'm sure he'll end up somewhere considering he was highly recruited/rated.

If he does that he will still have to sit out this entire year and next season too.
