I have driven it from T-town...best I recall a little less than 6 hours with several stops along the way. I wasn't exactly doing the speed limit. Straight shot on I-20.

Good grief.

Call me before you get on the highway...
:D

If I tried that, every state trooper in MS would be on me...with 3 stops, you would have to average around 90-100Mph, depending on the length of the stops...and traffic is an issue at Meridian, Jxn, Vicksburg, and Moroe! Wow!

Usually don't hit the triple digits driving, but one thing I do almost all the time is make my long distance drives at night. From Charleston, as example, crash early evening, get up and hit the road @ midnight. No traffic in Colombia, sun isn't up in ATL when I go through there, daybreak right before B-ham and in T-town at breakfast or before.

NOW, it's been several years since I went from T-town to Shreveport. Weekend trip in '99 just to gamble a bit. It sure seems like it was around 6 hours...

According to MapQuest, it's 400.44 miles from T-town to Shreveport. Estimated drive time...5:56.

Not as far as I thought from Morgan City:
279.37 miles, 4:20 drive time.

Birmingham is a bit further...depending on your starting point, it is 45 minutes plus. I would not count on making it that fast though. Mapquest does not account for the cop that sits on the east side of Meridian, or the one at the off ramp at Forest...or the road costruction on the west side of Meridian, and from Pearl through the stack at Richland and mess all the way through Clinton, or the cop that sits in the trees at VIcksburg.
:P

If you aren't careful you will hear "Whut we hayuv hyeah...is uh fail-yuh to communicate."

A good rule of thumb is 3 hours from Tuscaloosa to Jackson, another 2 hours to Monroe, and an hour and a half or so to Shreveport...adjust for stops.

If you hit it just right, you can make the mapquest time, but it is not easy or even likely - which is unusual because Mapquest usually says longer than it actually takes. I lived in MS for 8 years and routinely had meetings in Monroe. My family is from Northeast Alabama, so I have driven that route many, many times. Taking the family, I would allow at least 7-8 hours from B'ham to Shreveport...personally I would allow 8-8.5 because I know that we would stop 3 times at 15 minutes each. The worst that could happen is getting there a little earlier than planned.

Just trying to help.

when I drive between bham and dallas, I go thru shreveport. At 80-85, it's about 5 hours from ttown - watch out for cops in the following areas (Meridian, MS when you first enter town, & arcadia, la.

The drive is too easy. Traffic got backed up twice and we still made it under 6 hours last year. You can make some serious time on the Interstate. :D

me and the wife drove straight thru from Huntsville to Dallas in 12 hours, with shreveport being the halfway point (6 hours), which is where we swapped up the driving

Made the drive 4 times. It is easy. Take you about 7-ish hours.

I did Pelham to Longview in that amount of time. Right at 7 hours. It took a little longer getting back because I spotted that Huge Bass Pro Shop and had to stop. :D

Like I said, it is ~7 hours from Bham. Adjust for stops. Longview is across the state from Shreveport. It is the difference in Tuscaloosa and Anniston.

To make it in 5 hours from birmingham a person would have to drive over 90 the entire distance, without slowing down or stopping.

Not possible.

Its amazing what people will argue when it comes to driving times...I had someone argue that it was 30 minutes from Columbus to Grenada MS. I lived in Grenada at the time and moved there from Columbus. It was 100 miles and a 2Hr drive on the backroads.

I don't think traffic will be that big a deal if you make the trip on Saturday or Sunday going west, and since Monday is New Year's Eve the usual work traffic should not be a factor. But simply accidents on I-20 through Jackson/Pearl and Vicksburg can cause some unpleasant delays.

I have also noticed that the Pearl Police are enforcing the speed limit more closely east of Pearl on I-20. Once you pass Brandon's last exit heading west, keep an eye open until you reach Tinseltown, Bass Pro Shop, Mississippi Braves ballpark complex on your right.

Do watch your speed heading west on I-20 between both Clinton, MS exits and the Natchez Trace exit (city law enforcement, in particular, is bad through here).

Also, right as you reach the Hwy 61 North - Rolling Fork and Yazoo City exit just before you get into Vicksburg, both Vicksburg Police and MSHP like to run radar at the curve immediately after this exit (will be parked in the median just behind a stand of trees). The speed limit drops to 60 MPH until you cross the Mississippi River Bridge. During holidays, the speed limit is strictly enforced through this area. Be careful if you do try to observe the speed limit through here; truckers will push you big time.

Also heading west, stay in your left lane from the Rolling Folk exit until you pass two merging exits onto I-20 from Clay Street/ Vicksburg National Military Park. Slow merging vehicles will usually be greeting you on your right.

Everyone have a safe trip.

Mostly right...

Though as a rule the city cops do not usually have the authority to write tickets on interstates in Mississippi...US Highways either in most areas. It is not considered local jurisdiction for some reason and it has to be a County Sheriff or State Trooper. That is per some folks I know on the Magee PD. People fly down US49 all the time, doing 70 in a 45. The city cops can only watch. If they do pull someone over on 49, they have to call a Sheriff to write a ticket. I have only seen that done one time. People get killed quite often at the Walmart red light on 49 in Magee...transfer trucks ignore it and fly through town doing 70+ and the cops are helpless...sad,really.

The only exception I am aware of to the city cop rule is (I believe) in Meridian. They have some sort of task force...I don't know how it works. The State Troopers like to hover all around "The stack" at the 49/20 interchange. They are pretty bad around Vicksburg too.

Regardless, state troopers are bad enough on I20 in those areas...Meridian, Pearl at the stack, and Vicksburg to the state line.

The best radar detector in MS is a CB on channel 19 - if you can tolerate the garbage.

Well Big_Fan, I would not have listed these places if I did not know for sure this takes place. I've run between Vicksburg and Pearl many, many times these past 10 years and Vicksburg PD has always run radar at that curve if MSHP wasn't.

As far as Clinton pulling folks over for speeding on the interstate. I've seen it occur numerous times, especially since the overpass and road construction began near the old World Com building. Until about three years ago, I never saw CPD do this but now they hover around and stop speeders regularly. Favorite hiding spot--near the Natchez Trace exit heading toward Bolton.

Now the Pearl operation might just be a task force now that I think of it. When I do see them, it is usually two vehicles, one on each side of the interstate, and one is usually an SUV like a Bronco or Explorer. The first time I ever saw them hawking the stretch between the furthest West Brandon exit and Pearl, I actually thought it was the county until I passed the vehicles and noticed City of Pearl PD logos on them. This all started around December 2005, and has been happening ever since. It usually occurs right around the exit for Gray Daniels Ford.

It might not be standard protocol, but I know for a fact that Clinton and Vicksburg's PD will pull you over on the Interstate for speeding within their police jurisdictions.

I lived in Florence and Magee up until 6 months ago, and worked as a supply pastor for 2 denominations for quite a while, traveling all over the state.

It could have changed since I left...but I was told that they passed legislation to that effect a number of years ago. You can drive 90 down highway 49 and a city cop will just look at you. It is sad because Florence and Magee both need to be able to ticket speeders there...people drive like idiots and people get killed. I saw multiple fatalities in Florence at the red light and at Walmart in Magee.

I know that Meridian has some sort of loop-hole around it. Others may as well, but I have not seen a city cop from Vicksburg on the interstate in a long time. A Pearl cop pulled me over in 2002.

Jackson City may still have access to interstate 55, but I never saw a city cop on the interstate in all my time working as minister of visitation for a Jxn church, and I drove all over the place on the interstate around Jackson.

Anyway, I left Mississippi around 6 months ago. Things change.

I have not seen them setting up radar anywhere else along I-20 through town, but they are also notorious for stopping suspected drug runners and coyotes through this corridor. Call it racial profiling, but it's usually a vehicle with Hispanics and Texas plates. Warren County will participate in these stops, too.

The City of Vicksburg may have some access rights along I-20 through the city limits of Vicksburg. They do work accidents along this area. Also, as far as the radar thing goes, you can almost bank on it occurring the last week of the month.

Just trying to give folks a heads up as they drive through Clinton and Vicksburg. Whether you believe me or not, well that's your perogative and money.

Just trying to give folks a heads up as they drive through Clinton and Vicksburg. Whether you believe me or not, well that's your perogative and money.

Well, it does not really matter if it is city, county, or state, I agree that they are in those areas, and making it from B'ham to Shreveport in 5 hours cannot happen even if it is 3am and the cops are all unconscious :P

I do wish the MS would open the highways for municipal police. Like I said, Hwy 49 is a death trap and it is usually a local getting killed by an out of town person who has no respect for even keeping it close to the speed limit. Lots of people use 49 to go to the coast on vacation, and it is a major shipping alley, connecting Jackson / Memphis to Hattiesburg / Gulfport / Biloxi / Mobile.
