🏈 Big 12, SEC continue to dominate

Spring practices are over, and the start of the 2009 college football season is less than four months away.

Who has a shot at the BCS title? A New Year's Day bowl? Check the Top 25's chances. Mark Schlabach

Here's the third version of our way-too-early preseason Top 25, and there are several noticeable changes. Florida, with quarterback Tim Tebow and possibly the country's best defense coming back, remains a very solid No. 1. But Oklahoma and Texas flipped spots, with the Longhorns moving up to No. 2 and the Sooners falling to No. 3.
Alabama and LSU fell a few spots, and USC and Ohio State moved up a notch or two. Ole Miss was the biggest riser, going from No. 11 to No. 7. Not since Archie Manning played quarterback for the Rebels has there been this much excitement about football in Oxford.
Michigan State and Rutgers (and every other Big East team) are out. North Carolina and BYU are in.
The Big 12 and SEC continue to dominate the college football landscape with five teams from each league in the Top 25. Four ACC teams among the Top 25 could be a sign that conference is coming back, and the Pac-10 and Big 12 each have three teams in the Top 25.

I have never really cared what the rankings said about the top 25 before the season. I know it's fun to talk about but it's pretty meaningless.

I disagree with that. Normally, and we've just proved to be an exception with last years run, if you aren't in that top 15 or so teams in the pre-season working your way up to the #1 slot isn't possible.

IF we weren't in the SEC I wonder if we'd sniffed that #1 position last year.

The one thing that strikes me about these rankings are this.

You won't find many of the sports pundits talking about the lack of defense in the Big12.

But, here's a case where it must be in the back of their minds.

OU is getting highly ranked despite losing four of their five offensive lineman. And, despite the loss they took in the BCSNC game they are getting love.

But, our loss against Utah is forever being mentioned as a reason not to put us higher as well as the loss of three of our OL.

Um, why is Ole Miss in the top ten for everyone? I am confused.

Two games - Florida last year and the way the demolished last years love child Tx. Tech.

Just as a side note to that.

We started out the 2006 season outside of the top 25. That's after a 10-2 season and defeating a Tx Tech team that was ranked in the top 15 before the bowl game.

The difference is a lot have respect for Jevon Snead in the QB role at Ole Miss and we were starting JPW.

Sounds like a lot of pollsters knew what they were talking about with that reasoning.

Exactly, sure the rankings are meaningless when it comes to who is actually good or not, but if you don't start out somewhere in the rankings, it's almost impossible to go very high when they do count.
