🏈 Best CNS comment I've heard in a long time

Well this is an interesting phrase, because my first thought was "What is a tin horn, and why would shit run through it"?

Apparently it's "tinhorn," a cowboy term sort of like "greenhorn" is a cowboy term, meaning:

N. AMER.
informal
a contemptible person, especially one pretending to have money, influence, or ability:
"he portrayed Wyatt Earp as a narcissistic tinhorn"

Tinhorn definition, someone, especially a gambler, who pretends to be important but actually has little money, influence, or skill.

I started college at Georgia Southern. Some of the best times of my life were spent in statesboro. I have said for years big time teams do not want to schedule Georgia Southern, because unlike Georgia Tech, they are disciplined and have nothing to lose. A little different now that they've bumped up, but they beat Florida and have given Georgia decent games for years. It was pretty great to hear Coach Saban say the things he did back then, so it cracks me up to hear it again.

I was station at Ft Stewart, GA, living in Glennville,GA when Georgia Southern starter up the program. The Coach Erk Russell (think I misspell last name.) First 1-AA at the time to win back to back championship. Coach Erk would take a milk jub of water from a creek that ran thought the practice field. He would pour it at each end of the end zone during the playoff.

Maybe so, but that must be where Patton got it from. Literal **** through a literal tin horn doesn't make any sense. He must have meant it in the sense I posted above.

I'm sure you're right. He MUST have meant it in the same sense as the definition returned by your Google search. So then Saban compared Ga Southern's offense running over our defense to a shady western gambler.

On the other hand, him being from West Va, he may have intended it as the Southern/Country equivalent to 'water through a sieve'.

Some other versions I've heard are 'like raccoon shit through a tin roof' and 'like greased owl shit through a tin horn'. I'm sure there are many variations. They all mean pretty much the same thing: our defense couldn't stop them.

If you're going to be snotty about it, post your preferred definition with a sourced link. Btw, my source was just a little old thing called the Oxford English Dictionary.

That's one thing that drives me crazy about posting on RTB. The posters (at least some of them) don't understand the difference between something like a medical journal or the Oxford English Dictionary and Yahoo Answers. It's really tiresome. "Something you read on a website," right.

And yes, a phrase about "shit running through a tinhorn" makes sense in that instance. Ever heard of a bullshitter? It's another way of describing a bullshitter. Makes perfect sense to me. You do understand westerns were super popular in the time Patton would have said that, right?

You may be right that it could be something else, but there's no reason to be so shitty about it when I'm just remarking on figuring out what a weird phrase meant.
