šŸ“” Berry Tramel says OU fans are done with the Big 12.

If OU leaves the Big12, the conference will implode. If that's the case, who does the SEC pursue? The quick answer will be Texas, but they come with a lot of baggage (Longhorn Network).

So we have Tramel, who covers OU and OSU for a living, makes a comment that Finebaum repeats. And, we're left with writers vilifying Paul for what Barry said?

------

You probably missed it, but the SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum, the man who made Phyllis from Mulga famous and helped to make tree-killer Harvey Updyke the convicted felon that he is, tossed out his two cents on the Big 12 Conference’s future last week.

The Big 12 chose to officially ignore him.

My old friend Finebaum, a protected species in SEC country, told a Birmingham, Ala., radio station that Oklahoma ā€œpretty desperatelyā€ wants out.

I call fake news.

Meeting in Phoenix last weekend, Big 12 athletic directors didn’t even address the Finebaum ā€œreport.ā€ One went so far as to wince when I told him I wanted to write about it.

ā€œIt’s just not true,ā€ the athletic director said.

I believe the AD. But when a clown yells ā€œFire!ā€ in a crowded theatre, the fire truck comes anyway. That’s the way this works, as the guys at ESPN well know.

ā€œI think the Big 12 is in big trouble,ā€ Finebaum said on radio station WJOX. ā€œI don’t think the Big 12 as we know it will still be in existence in five years.ā€

Finebaum continued, ā€œI can think of one school in the Big 12 that would like out pretty desperately ... and that school is the University of Oklahoma.ā€

Yawn. Here we go again.

Nary a month goes by that somebody from somewhere else isn’t loading up the Sooner chuck wagon and predicting a trip east ... or north ... or over them thar TV towers.

Finebaum predicted that when the Big 12 implodes, it will be because of the lack of a conference TV network.

IT’S NOT AS IF THE BIG 12 IS MAKING CHUMP CHANGE FOR ITS 10 MEMBERS. A YEAR AGO, THE LEAGUE HANDED OUT CHECKS FOR $30.4 MILLION TO EACH SCHOOL.

ā€œWhich is critical in this world of exploding television reality,ā€ Finebaum said. ā€œAnd I don’t know how you can really survive like that.ā€

So says a guy whose primary income comes from exploding TVs.

But it’s not as if the Big 12 is making chump change for its 10 members. A year ago, the league handed out checks for $30.4 million to each school. When it announces this year’s payouts next month, the take-home for each Big 12 member is expected to fall somewhere behind the Big Ten’s and SEC’s distributions but ā€œfar aheadā€ of the Pac-12 and Atlantic Coast Conference, all of which have their own networks.

TCU, Baylor and Texas Tech can certainly live with that. And I’ve got to think Oklahoma can, too. It really, for now, has no realistic other choice.

The Big 12’s grant of rights don’t expire for another eight years. The SEC or Big Ten isn’t going to write Oklahoma a quarter-billion-dollar welcome check.

The Longhorn Network, admittedly, remains an ongoing burr in the Big 12’s saddle. But don’t expect Texas to give back one penny of its 20-year, $300 million deal.

If nothing else, it binds the Longhorns — and, by default, Oklahoma — to the Big 12.

Rather than look for ripcords and escape chutes, therefore, the Sooners and Longhorns should know their first mission is to improve their products on the football field.

That’s really what any talk of comparing conferences is all about, because the Big 12 is playing for championships, men’s and women’s, in nearly every other sport — basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, swimming and on and on.

The perception of Big 12 football has clouded because it has only sent one team to the CFP playoff in three seasons. Beginning this season, however, the league champion will have had to negotiate a full nine-game round-robin, plus double-down on a rematch in the new conference title game.

If Oklahoma is desperate to go anywhere, that should be it.

The conference would never say that schools are unhappy. They've tried to put a band-aid on things by having a conference championship game without having divisions to compete for a slot. Oklahoma snuck into the CFP two years ago but dropped in the final rankings from #3 to #4 since there was no championship game. After a long review, the conference failed to add teams. The external schools wanted to join but were blocked (why wouldn't the conference want more schools and the related revenue it produces?). The conference doesn't have a major TV deal and only one school is benefitting from TV (Texas).

Sounds to me like everything is rosey in the palm of the Big12.

The Big 12 is OU and Texas and as of today Texas is just a Big Hat and no cattle. You would need to take OU and OSU . Texas would go to the PAC 12 maybe but the rest of the teams in the Big 12 are a Conference USA type league. WVU is on a tuff spot with no place to go.

JMO but Bog Big Game Stoops is a dayum good football coach. He would be better outside that stupid passing league. He (staff) can't play great defense every week because all those passing teams will not allow them.

I find it hilarious that Finebaum quotes a reporter covering the Almost12 who says this about Oklahoma but it's other writers blasting Finebaum as if it was his opinion.

The Big 12 is OU and Texas and as of today Texas is just a Big Hat and no cattle.

I ran across some "blowback" on my phone just about an hour ago from BurntOrangeNation.com. Here's how the article is titled but pay attention to the subtitle.

Daily Round Up: Finebaum Compared The Conference To The Titanic
And in other news, Finebaum is an idiot.
I don't know how many of you guys have had writing courses in school but if there is one constant with subtitles is it is suppose to encapsulate the article itself--a summary, so to speak--and it's not the play to try to be cute or coy.

Texas is the first Power 5 school to use state-of-the-art technology to monitor head injuries.

The horns are hot in recruiting right now.

The Land Thieves should just join every conference.

Iowa State’s football team has lots of upsides this season.

This fall, ISU should have its best offense since Wallace was quarterback. The defense is a massive question and will rely on JUCO transfers (albeit well-touted ones) up front. It might not come around enough for the Cyclones to surge to a bowl bid. But we should see enough upside to think that the next three- or four-year term for ISU will be a much happier one.

Paul Finebaum compared the Big 12 to the Titanic.

"I see the Big 12 as a complete trainwreck,ā€ Finebaum told SiriusXM College Sports Nation on Wednesday. ā€œThe Big 12 is the Titanic and you can see the iceberg in sight.ā€

Several Big 12 coaches made CBS Sports’ Top 25 college coaches list.

Here’s a great college football Mother’s Day article. Remember, this Sunday is Mother’s Day so buy your mom a gift.

ESPN (Insider) has an article on the all-time best Texas teams. I wish I could give everyone access, but unfortunately, I can’t. Since BON readers know more than ESPN, what’s your take on the best Longhorn team of all-time?
Anyone see anything here that disputes the point Berry Tramel made?

I don't have numbers in front of me but I can't see where OU & OSU would add any real value as far as TV footprint to the conference.
You'll find your share of OU and OSU fans in N. Texas. Dallas brings a top ten market into play. The Lubbock area of Texas is normally in the top 150 (not a big reach there.) OKC is normally top 50, Tulsa in the top 75.
