🏈 Being concerned about the offensive play calling

I know I'm in the minority but I have very little complaints about the offensive play calling this year.
I'm not nearly as concerned about the play calling as I am about the execution. I feel like plays are called based on a rhythm. There were plays called that would've worked great had they been executed. When they are not executed, the direct result is no rhythm. Try this next game and see how you do at play calling:

Grab a piece of paper and make a note BEFORE each play:

1) predict either a run or a pass
2) predict whether it will be to the right or left

Then note what the play call was and whether it was successful.

Then compare the actual play call to your predictions.

If you're right most of the time, maybe you've got room to complain.

I've tried it and it didn't work out so well for me.

Or if you don't want to try your luck at that, what would you do different if you were calling the plays. I honestly don't know what I would change.

My biggest gripe in the Kiffin era and now this one is that we never get under center and use the power run game. Everything is out of shotgun.

In general I don't think he's any worse than Kiffin... Dissapointed he's not markedly better though. Womp Womp

My concern is that we lack rhythm or consistency for large chunks of time. Last night, LSU, put 8 in the box and we could not hit a quick hitter, a TE just behind the backers and Harris was not used much. I know we dropped a couple that we should have caught but that happens. I have no issue with Jh throwing out of the gun 99% of the time but I would like to see us under center, with a true FB and Tb once every blue moon. Again, I have issues with rhythm and consistency.

Seems like the vast majority of our run plays are between the tackles and other teams have figured this out. It was easy for ls(who) to crowd the box to stop the run and seems like we just continued to run the same plays. We have very little creativity in our passing game and defenses rarely respect the deep ball. What I see is a lack of creativity. Kiffin seem to be a master at finding mismatches and being creative (minus the jet sweep). Finally, I don't understand why Daboll doesn't implement the offensive plays that worked for Kiffin? OJ's famous play, Drake's isolation, Ridley's post route, etc....

I have to agree - while I agree with the OP to a certain extent (not sure it was real predictable last night), why NOT use Foster on a jet sweep? Why not use a shovel pass? We hit the quick pass to Scarborough out of the backfield at times, but where is the isolation or wheel route?

I still wish we'd run some flys with the ball up for grabs - I'd bet on Ridley, OR Foster, in those situations. How many corners can cover our guys? Have to call the right routes, and there's no way they shouldn't be open when there are 8 in the box!

Offensive play calling , effectiveness and rhythm depends mostly on whether our offensive line and blockers can block the defensive rushers and their run stoppers. Some teams have just about as much talent as we do, and then it boils down to heart and who wants it worse. Having said that, When going against other talented teams players, like noted in some post above, Coach Daboll needs to mix in some new stuff that has not been put on tape yet. Mix in a few surprises here and there, some things the other teams haven't seen yet. Against weaker teams we can line up and basically run anything we want to and win easily. Not so much against stronger teams.

With the dropped passes and average run blocking, I’m not sure anyone’s offensive play calling would look great.

I miss the grand student body right type play where Jalen was the last player running around the end following his RBs. That was easy yards so many times.

Trust me... He's saving wrinkles for the Barn and beyond.

No sense showing all your cards until you have to. We haven't had to at all to this point, yet we're still a top 7 or 8 offense in the country. Remember when we always fielded a great D while barely sniffing top 30 in O during the first few years of the Saban era?

I'd say our current O is pretty Damn good. Room for improvement, but better than years past.

Not really concerned with the play calling. As others have said, just concerned with the execution. One game the execution is spot on and the next game it’s not.
My opinion about this past game was the” rat poison “ spewed by the media that LSU didn’t have a chance of beating us. But then again, we get everyone’s best shot.

I think that these guys have been reading! Is what Coach Saban has said is Rat Poison! Didn't LSU have freshman in the Oline? How many time did the guys get to the QB? Twice I can remember, Mosley put that hurting on him.

Not sure this is the game to worry about execution. Parker Wilson's overtime game in Baton Rogue, 2009 Patrick Peterson interception that wasn't, 2011 game of the century, 2012 blitz and the screen, 2014 Blake Sims last second field goal and overtime TD to DeAndrew White, 2015, Derrick Henry's Heisman performance with over 40 carries for almost 300 yards and we needed every inch of them. We just won by 14 points and their only foray into the end zone was a wildcat misalignment. Perhaps LSU is the last SEC team we need to have this conversation about?

Ok. Agree with a lot...but disagree with a lot also...
I thin O is progressing fine...scoring a lot..not as much as last year..but D was much better last year....much better....
The O is hard to describe.....break a lot of tendencies......it's designed for JH...
If he would just hit those opn receivers and quit deciding who to throw it to when the play is called.... something one poster said....throw it deep and let the receivers go for a catch..... but again..thats not JH training.... its still a lot of "dont make mistakes " and punter will change field position ( if he will kick it quicker.if not someone is going to block one of his kicks).....and D will hold them...

I would agree! Any good OC isn't going to dig into his "bag of tricks" just to get a quick score or score to pass the spread so fans will be happy. You use those plays against certain fronts/coverages. It is similar to your 2 point play and onside kicks. You don't throw them all out there in a game just to use them. You use them when you need them.

I hope you guys are right. The O seemed so stale Sat night. I even made the comment we might ought to put Tua in just to change the pace. Seems that kid gives us a spark as soon as he hit the field. I know...I know. Everyone thinks im crazy....Am im not complaining. I remember the The Shula and Dubose days....so i am eternally grateful for the run we have had and are having. Just dont like seeing us have sooooooo many 3 and outs and punting all night. It worries me for when we play some of these high power O teams like the Barn and Oklahoma. Will we be able to keep up?
