🏀 GAME THREAD 🏀 Players Era Festival- Las Vegas: Bama closes out tournament with 105 - 72 win over Maryland

The bowl games and their revenue meet basketball?

I caught an interview with Bill Self following a Kansas game where he was talking about the future of exhibithiom tournaments. He offered a perspective we all knew, I think, but I'm glad to see it addresses. It puts things in context of money, again.

If we go back to when it started, here's a quote from Dawn Staley: "The opportunity Players Era will provide us within the NIL space is really unprecedented and again we are so thankful to be a part of this tremendous event.”

It's an NIL event: boost the coffiers. But, how much?

Self mentioned his team would get seven figures for playing. He went on to talk about it cositing WELL into six figures just to get the team and staff there for the event.

What does it essentially amount to in the end? NIL money for your bench, IMO. The right man, it's it IS your sixth man's NIL.

Gonzaga is going to be really tough challenge on the boards. Ike and Warley both know how to crash the glass with high intensity. Also, since it is Gonzaga, you know their spacing and ball movement it going to be elite. Both times we've played them, it has been a damn good game. We just have to match their physicality, which means Sherrell needs to step up.

We need to be able to defend and rebound without getting into the Bonus with eight to ten minutes left in a half.

Nine (Rutgers, Creighton, Kansas, St. John's, Houston, Auburn, Gonzaga, SDSU, and UNLV) of the 18 teams get the same time slot on both Monday and Tuesday. IMO, that is a huge advantage for those teams. We shall see. Wouldn't be surprised if two of those teams wound up in the Championship game.

Using that logic Tennessee would have an advantage over everyone. The ones you listed have a 24 hour break, UT gets 29.

Bama and Oregon get a few extra hours of rest before game two, Tuesday. Michigan and Maryland are two teams with less than the 24 hour rest period.

To me, it would have made more sense to have the third place game Wednesday instead of Thursday.

In case you're wondering the tie-breakers for who advances to Weds and Thurs are ... well, it's Vegas.

  1. Record. We're going to see nine teams at 1-0, nine at 0-1.
  2. Head to head,
  3. Plus / Minus Tiebreaker. (Here's where it gets weird. There's a max of +20 so teams won't be encouraged to run up the score. But #4)
  4. Total Points Scored.
  5. Total Points Allowed.
  6. AP ranking as of today. (Michigan and Houston are the only two ranked higher.
The bottom four teams will have to stay in Vegas and play on Thursday.

Those games will be played at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. (Vegas time) in the Michelob Ultra Arena.

If UNLV does not qualify for the championship or third-place game, the Runnin’ Rebels will fill one of the two matchups regardless of ranking.

If a Thursday matchup pits two teams from the same conference or the teams play in 2025-26, the matchups will be switched.

If somehow the matchups cannot be switched, then the higher ranked team (based on the above criteria) will be moved to Wednesday and the lowest ranked team (No. 14) scheduled for Wednesday will move to Thursday.
