SCOUTING ALABAMA
• Alabama enters this weekend with a perfect 4-0 record, the best start for the Tide since the 2013 season when UA began 6-0. Most recently, the Crimson Tide shut out Middle Tennessee on Tuesday, 4-0. Prior to the midweek meeting, the Tide recorded a perfect opening weekend to start the 2018 campaign, sweeping Valparaiso across a three-game series in Tuscaloosa.
• The bullpen has played a crucial role during the current streak, tossing 18.2 scoreless innings of work after giving up a two-out run in the first relief inning of the year. The relievers have collected three of the Tide's four wins and registered one save in the process.
• The Crimson Tide used a combination of seven arms in the 4-0 shutout win over Middle Tennessee on Tuesday afternoon. Alabama starter Garret Rukes worked 2.0 innings and was followed by Brock Love, who added 2.0 innings of his own. Both players were making their first appearance since having season-ending elbow surgeries early in the season during the 2017 campaign. Tyler Adams earned his first win to highlight the effort from the other five arms.
• Friday's season opener featured a 16-2 win. The Crimson Tide used 17 hits to score 16 runs with each of the starters scoring at least one run and eight of the nine starters collecting at least one hit.
• Alabama's 16 runs were its most in a season-opening game since 1958 when UA took down Tulane, 20-1, in New Orleans on March 28, and the run total was also the highest for the Crimson Tide in home opener since 1968 when UA defeated Livingston on March 18 by a score of 17-2.
• The 16 runs under the direction of Bohannon were the third most in a head coaching debut in program history and the most since Joseph Black's 1898 team defeated Massey's Business College, 20-3.
• Alabama's offense on Opening Day was highlighted by three-hit efforts from Cobie Vance, who went 3-for-4 with a double, RBI, walk and two runs scored, and Jett Manning, with the shortstop finishing a perfect 3-for-3 including a home run, a team-high three RBI and two runs scored. Sam Finnerty earned his first win of the season behind a strong outing that saw the junior go a career-long 6.0 innings, allowing one earned run on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
• With runners on first and second and two down, Joe Breaux lined a single to right field to plate the winning run and walk it off, 6-5, for Alabama on Saturday. The Crimson Tide entered the ninth with the score even at 5-5 before a hit-by-pitch and bunt single put two on for the Tide. Two outs later, a single through the right side from Breaux brought in the winning run.
• The duo of Kyle Cameron and Dylan Duarte shut down the Valpo offense over the final four frames after an early exit from the UA starter, holding the Crusaders scoreless. Duarte earned his first victory of the season with 1.1 frames of hitless work that included a strikeout.
• Alabama secured the series sweep with a 12-6 win on Sunday. The offense provided some late insurance runs after the Tide was forced to call on its bullpen early in the winning effort. Holcombe paced the offense, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 with a walk, coming up a double short of the cycle.
• The Crimson Tide bullpen dominated after an early exit from the starter once again, with Davis Vainer and Brock Guffey working the final 5.1 innings and allowing only two hits while striking out seven. Vainer tossed a career-high tying 3.2 frames, giving up two hits and issuing one walk while adding four strikeouts for his first career win. Guffey followed with 1.2 innings of no-hit baseball, finishing the game with three of his five outs coming by way of the strikeout for the save.
• Across the first three games of 2018, the Crimson Tide accumulated 41 hits, 16 of which went for extra bases, and added 34 runs on the way to the series sweep. The 41 hits were the most across a three-game stretch by the Crimson Tide since May 8-10, 2015, when Alabama totaled 43 hits in the weekend sweep of Auburn on the Plains. The 16 extra-base hits were the most for a Tide offense spanning a three-game stretch since March 18-21, 2014, when the Tide also had 16 in two games vs. Alcorn State and the series-opener with Arkansas.
• Alabama returns 21 letterwinners while losing 11 from the 2017 squad. The 2018 Crimson Tide welcomes back eight positional starters and three starting pitchers while hosting 11 newcomers (including transfers who sat out last season).

SCOUTING WASHINGTON STATE
• Washington State returns 18 letterwinners, including eight positional starters and two starting pitchers, from the 2017 team that finished 24-29 overall and 10-20 in the Pac-12. The 2018 roster is without nine letterwinners from a season ago, a number that is comprised of one positional starter and one pitcher, while WSU welcomes 16 newcomers.
• The Cougars were selected to finish 10th overall in the Pac-12 in the conference's preseason poll, as voted on by the league coaches
• Marty Lees is now in his third season as a head coach, all with Washington State. Over his first two seasons, the Cougars were 43-64. WSU comes to Tuscaloosa with a 2-3 mark in the 2018 campaign. A 1994 graduate of Western Oregon, Lees is joined by assistant coaches Dan Spencer and Jim Homer, both in their third seasons with the Cougar baseball team.
• Washington State University is a public university located in Pullman, Wash., and boasts an enrollment of 19,556 students. It was founded on March 28, 1890 as Washington State College, less than five months after Washington gained statehood. The school's name was changed to Washington State University in 1959.

ALABAMA VS. THE PAC-12
• The Crimson Tide welcomes Washington State for the second, third and fourth meetings ever in the history of the two teams. The lone matchup came on June 18, 1950 at the College World Series, with WSU winning, 9-1, in Omaha.
• Alabama has faced off with just four of the current 11 member teams and has never hosted a Pac-12 opponent for a three-game series in Tuscaloosa. The Tide is 4-3 all-time against the current conference teams.
• Stanford and Alabama have met the most of any current Pac-12 participant, with the Cardinal owning a 2-1 advantage in the series. Alabama holds a perfect mark against Arizona State (2-0) and USC (1-0).
• The last time the Tide squared off with a Pac-12 opponent was Stanford in 2000 in the Palo Alto Regional. The Cardinal won the first of three contests, 8-6, on May 27, before the two played a doubleheader a day later. Alabama claimed a 14-9 win in game one to send it to a final deciding game where Stanford would eliminate the Tide from postseason play with a 16-6 win.

ON DECK
The Crimson Tide will take to the road for the first time during the 2018 season in its next game, heading to Birmingham to take on in-state foe Samford on Tuesday evening. The two teams are set for a 6 p.m. CT first pitch at Joe Lee Griffin Field with the game airing on the SoCon Sports Network.

Baseball Welcomes Washington State to Tuscaloosa this Weekend - Alabama Athletics

Good ball game here, folks. It's a little strange listening to it on my phone (radio stream.) Makes me feel like I've been transported back to my childhood.

Bama has fought their way back to take the lead in the bottom of the 4th. It's now 3-2 Bama.

The Crimson Tide took game one, 12-4, before an 8-2 victory in game two of the day

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama baseball secured wins in both games of Friday's doubleheader with Washington State to claim the series victory. The Crimson Tide came out on top, 12-4, in game one before an 8-2 win in game two of the day at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. With the pair of wins, the Tide improves to 6-0 on the young season.

The Crimson Tide offense batted .375 (27-72) on the day with two doubles, a triple and one home run on the way to 20 total runs. Alabama used 16 hits in game one before tallying 11 in game two to help secure the series win and Friday sweep.

"Honestly, (the offense) has surpassed my expectations up to this point," said Alabama head coach Brad Bohannon. "There was a lot of hard contact today. I felt good about this group going into the season. Having an older group of position players, you have guys that aren't trying to do too much. We have some depth and length to our lineup along with some balance. They've done a great job to this point."

Alabama's arms also excelled on the day. Starters Sam Finnerty (2-0) and Jake Walters (1-0) each earned a win with the bullpen totaling 6.1 innings of scoreless baseball including one save.?

GAME ONE
Alabama cruised past Washington State in game one of the day for a 12-4 win. The Tide used 16 hits and a season-high tying 10 walks on the way to the win.

Junior Joe Breaux set a new Alabama record with five walks in as many plate appearances, surpassing the former high total of four in a game. Chandler Avant paced the Tide in hits with a 3-for-6 day that included two RBI and a run scored, one of six starting members of the Alabama order to record multi-hit days.

Washington State gained an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the third thanks to a two-out, two-run home run for the first runs of the day. The Crimson Tide moved in front an inning later, putting up three runs in the fourth, using five consecutive two-out singles to take a 3-2 lead after four innings of play.

Avant, a senior, began the singles rally, followed by freshman Sam Praytor to put two aboard for Keith Holcombe. The junior outfielder slapped another single to center to score one and bring Jett Manning, also a junior, to the plate with Manning loading the bases on his single. Senior Cody Henry capitalized on the opportunity, sending a fifth straight Tide single to center to score the tying and go-ahead runs.

Alabama added six more in the bottom of the fifth to extend its lead to 9-2. The Tide batted around in the inning and collected five hits and three walks for its six-spot. A pair of walks from Breaux and senior Hunter Alexander began the inning before Chandler Taylor cleared the bases with a three-run home run, the junior's first of the season.

Two outs later, the Tide strung together three more singles and followed with two walks to cross another three runs. Holcombe and Manning singled before Henry's single brought in one. A walk to junior Cobie Vance loaded the bases for Alexander, who sent a high chopper to short for an infield single to tally one more and give Alabama a seven-run advantage after five.

Washington State added two in the top of the sixth, using a pair of two-out, bases-loaded walks to make it a 9-4 game, but Alabama came right back with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 12-4 lead. With one down, Breaux drew his Alabama-record fifth walk to get the Tide started. Alexander and Taylor followed with singles to load the bases before Avant brought in two with a single of his own. A walk to Praytor and a fielder's choice from Holcombe crossed one more to cap the inning's scoring.

Finnerty earned his second win in as many starts working 5.2 innings with the junior allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Junior Mason Duke, redshirt sophomore Kyle Cameron and freshman Brady Greene combined for the final 3.1 innings to secure the Tide win.

GAME TWO
Alabama dominated once again, limiting Washington State to two runs on three hits in the 8-2 victory in game two of the twinbill. The Crimson Tide hitters collected double-digit totals once again, tallying 11 in the nightcap.

Walters earned his first win of the season thanks to 6.0 innings of two-run baseball. The right-hander allow two hits and issued two walks while striking out seven. He then handed the ball over to sophomore Deacon Medders, who tossed the final 3.0 innings for the save. Medders allowed only one hit while striking out three batters in his relief outing.

Washington State struck first once again, this time in the top of the first. The Cougars drew a two-out walk and then sent a homer over the wall in right-center to take a 2-0 lead. Alabama came back with one run of its own in the home half of the first, using a bases-loaded fielder's choice from Avant to cut the WSU lead in half.

In the bottom of the second, Alabama took the lead right back from Washington State, scoring a pair to make it 3-2. Manning got aboard on a throwing error and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. With the leadoff man at second. Henry sent a single to center for the game-tying RBI. Two outs later, Alexander doubled to center to cross the go-ahead run and give UA the advantage after two innings of play.

The fifth saw the Tide add three more insurance runs to pad its lead. Alexander led it off, reaching on an error, and a single from Taylor followed by an Avant hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for UA. Holcombe delivered in the next at-bat, singling to center to two score two. Two batters later, Henry sent a sac fly to left to score another, making it a 6-2 contest.

Alabama added two more in the bottom of the eighth for an 8-2 lead. A one-out single from Vance and Breaux gave UA a pair of baserunners. One out later, Taylor scored both with his first triple of the season to end the night's scoring.

The Crimson Tide will go for the sweep tomorrow in the series finale. Alabama will look to junior right-hander Sam Gardner while Washington State calls on senior southpaw Scotty Sunitsch. The contest is scheduled for a 1 p.m. CT first pitch on getaway day and can be seen live on SEC Network+.

Keith Holcombe highlighted the offense with a perfect 4-for-4 day

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – After a two-hour delayed start and a 45-minute in-game rain delay, Alabama baseball completed the sweep of Washington State with a 9-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The win improves the Crimson Tide to a perfect 7-0, its best start to a new year since 2010.

"It was a long day, a challenging day," said Alabama head coach Brad Bohannon. "With a doubleheader yesterday, a delayed start and a rain delay today, (today's win) wasn't quite as sharp as we would have wanted. We walked them five times, hit them twice and we struck out 10 times. With that being said, I'm obviously glad to get the win and get the sweep."

The Crimson Tide bats produced nine runs on the power of 12 hits and three walks. Alabama's offense was highlighted by Keith Holcombe's perfect 4-for-4 afternoon that saw the junior record a team-high and career-high four RBI. Holcombe's day extended his hitting streak to six games. Also contributing a multi-hit effort was Chandler Avant, who went 2-for-4 with one double, a home run, two RBI and a pair of runs scored. With the productive day at the dish, the senior second baseman has now recorded at least one hit in all seven games of the young season.

On the hill, Alabama starter Sam Gardner worked 4.0 innings of one-run baseball, allowing four hits and issuing two walks with two strikeouts. The junior starter exited the game following a 45-minute rain delay, giving way to his bullpen. UA used four arms to combine for the final 5.0 innings, with freshman Brock Guffey (1-0) earning his first win of the season. Guffey tossed 2.1 scoreless frames, allowing one hit and a walk while striking out three for the win.

The Tide struck first in the series finale, scoring a pair in the bottom of the first to grab an early 2-0 lead. Leadoff man Cobie Vance began the game with a double to left to put himself in scoring position, and two outs later a walk and a hit-by-pitch for the Tide loaded the bases. Holcombe capitalized on the opportunity, with the junior collecting his first double of the season to score two and give the Tide the early advantage.

Alabama added single tallies in both the second and third to extend the lead. The second saw Jett Manning lead things off with a ground-rule double, before the junior advanced to third on a groundout. With two down, fellow junior Joe Breaux lined a single up the middle to score Manning and make it a 3-0 ballgame.

Avant continued the trend from the first two innings, beginning the bottom of the third with a double of his own. In the next at-bat, Holcombe notched his third RBI of the day with a single through the right side to score the leadoff man and push the Tide lead to 4-0 after three frames.

Washington State plated one in the fourth, drawing a leadoff walk and a single to put two on. A Cougar sac bunt moved both runners into scoring position before a groundout to first scored one. One inning later, WSU crossed two runs with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch followed by a sacrifice fly to right. Another hit batsman loaded the bases, but a 1-3 putout from Guffey on the next play ended the threat with three runners stranded and kept UA in front, 4-3.

The Tide would add one more in the bottom of the fifth to take a two-run lead once again. A leadoff walk to Chandler Taylor and a passed ball put the junior outfielder in scoring position. One out later, Holcombe collected his third hit of the day, a single through the left side to bring in Taylor and set the score at 5-3 after five full.

UA added three more in the seventh, with the inning's scoring was highlighted by a solo home run from Avant, his first of the season. The Tide would plate one more in the eighth to make it a 9-3 contest, the eventual final.

Alabama will return to the diamond on Tuesday as the Crimson Tide takes its first roadtrip of the 2018 season, heading to Birmingham to take on Samford. The first of two pairings between the in-state foes this season is scheduled for a 6 p.m. CT first pitch at Joe Lee Griffin on the Samford campus. The Tide will then return to Tuscaloosa to host Alabama State on Wednesday afternoon with a 3 p.m. first pitch in midweek matchup.
